Anyone have a pet load for 30-06, 168g amax using varget? To be loaded for 30-06 S&W (howa) with a 24" barrel - 1in 10 twist. Anybody using this particular load?

My universal load with Varget in a .30-06 is to use 50 grains with a 165 or 168-grain bullet.

This load seems to work in everything, including my Garand. In fact, it is pretty well the only load I use in my Garand, but it is also very accurate and consistent in bolt guns.

With your 24-inch barrel, this combo should give you between 2,750 to 2,800 f.p.s. and I'd be surprised if it grouped larger than 1.5 inches (though it may well group much better).

I've never met a .30-06 that didn't like 50 grains of Varget with a 165 or 168-grain bullet.

i would email hornady for load data if i were you with high bc bullets there data is usually quite different then in the manuals there was a 4 grain difference between my berger data and all my manuals with same weighted bullet in 7mm. after you get the data you will probably have to develop the load like usual because even if someone does have a load for there gun it may not be good for yours.

a little off topic how do you like the howa i have been looking at one in 300 wsm

Mine is the Smith and Wesson verson of the Howa 1500 in 30-06. I absolutely love it. It is a wood stocked mid 80's model without so much as a spec of plastic anywhere on it. All metal trigger guard, magazine etc. I wish they still biult them this way. I may have lucked out and got a "good one" but it shoots less than 1MOA every time I take it to the range. Would I recommend it...Absolutely.
