how well does the ol 3006 do as a percision round.i got my old hunting rifle which is a savage 110 bore is still vary healty and its bought and paid for
it shot well with hunting hand loads 1-.75 of an inch never tried any acuracy loads yet.i know it is a 1/10 twist so i would like to try some 175 sierras.and how upgradible is it ie barrels stocks etc. have any advive on some hand loads powder. thanks

Sounds like you are already off to a good start! It may be possible to bring it down to 1/2 inch maybe even better. I like 168 grain Sierra's and Hornady Match pills myself. And how can you go wrong with H4895? Pretty versatile powder, proven performer.:)

cant see why with a brand new barrel a .30-06 cant shoot just as well as a .308 or any other standard precission cartrige. it has more space for powder to push it faster and able to shoot heavyer bullets if you can find them.

It can certainly be made accurate enough, but it just isn't very comfortable for shooting 40 rounds off a bench. Unless you have a varmint/target barrel profile, the gun will get too hot very quickly

Why not 6.5-06?

Might not be as flashy as some of the new guccci long range cartridges, but if you get a good barrel, get the action nice and tight, bed the snot out of everything and practice, practice, practice, it'll be as good as anything else out there.

The cartridge is much more precise than your spelling, but it's not seen in benchrest anymore, if that's what you're looking for.

I don't think he will be shooting benchrest with a Savage... Anyways, .30-06 will make a fine cartridge for precision shooting with enough work on your part. If it shoots 1-.75"already you have got a great start. Get yourself some match bullets, handweigh your charges and start experimenting.

thats what i was thinking b any recomended powders and magnum or non primers.

Properly sized fireformed and prepped brass preferably WIN.

H4350, CCI BR2 or Fed 210M primer. 155, 168 or 178gr Amax, 155, 168, 175gr Berger seated with no runout.

Work up in small increments of powder testing at 200yds. Watch for the most accurate node near where you start to see pressure signs. You should only need to fire 2 or 3 rds per increment to see what is working.

Then retest around the most accurate nodes in 0.2gr increments.

If the rifle is properly bedded, and everything tight, 1/2 min is a real possibility until the barrel gets hot.

There is nothing wrong with the 30-06. It will do all that a 308 will do, just faster.

X2 on Obtunded.
Barrell heat could cause troubles on extended use, not sure what (if any) match type barrells you'd find in that caliber.

M.

Any match quality .308" diameter barrel will work sufficiently, providing that it's been properly chambered by a competent gunsmith.

mysticplayer nailed it; however, the disadvantage of the 30-06 is increased recoil, powder consumption, muzzle blast and heat.

There is nothing that makes the '06 incapable of good accuracy...

You can do a lot with the rifle you already have.

Make sure you have good barrel cleaning equipment and know how to use it.

get a scope of 15 to 24 X. I prefer fixed power. less to go wrong.

Have someone who knows how to bed the rifle for you. This will improve accuracy and consistancy.

Get a couple hundred case of the same lot. Either new or once fired. Sort them by weight into 50 round boxes. Say, 1 grain encrements.

Buy match bullets. Sierra 175 would be my choice.

Buy either standard CCI, Federal or Winchester primers, or the match flavour of each. No magnum required.

Buy some good powder. RL15, VVN14o or 150, 4895 or 4064 or RL15.

Load the ammo with the bullets about 20 thou off the rifling.

Start low, laod 5 of each, in .5 gr increments, and shoot grups. let rifle cool between groups. With luck you will see that one range of loads seems best. the repeat the test, loading 10 shots, in .2 gr increments, around the load that worked best.

Repeat until barrel shot out.

Then re-barrel with a 260 Rem, 6.5x55, 6.5-06 or 308.

30-06 is one I always wanted to try myself, but I already have to many guns that need my attention. If you go the 06 route follow the tips mentioned so far as they are good but also considder treating the barrel with Microlon Gun Juice it will help with barrel life.

Have someone build you a decent muzzle break to tame the recoil and keep you on target. It is a great bonus to be able to maintain your sight picture down the scope and see impacts when shooting long range. I think your on the way to a good dual purpose precision hunting rifle. Post pics and let us know how it works out for you.
