30-06 balistics question

Have used Federal blue for years. Its not what you like, its what your gun likes.Good to reload, instead of buying brass.Works for me.

I guess we just don't have any guns that like the blue box! I'd rather buy good quality ammo and new brass when needed. I just can't stand inaccuracy! It just ain't no fun at all! By the way Gary, your middle name doesn't start with C, does it? :p

I should search ..but im tired and wish to know.
Dad alwase said sight 25yards dead on is also dead on at 200 yards with 180 grain.
now i know this is aprox...and theres a lot more info you need.
but i fired a couple at 445 yards with my rifle and my boys identical rifle
both came in about 2 feet low and 10-12 inches right.
2 diffrent days same result with mine..so it aint windage.
reason for asking is ..we got cow elk draws and sometimes its a long shot...
I guess the question is ..is 24 low sounding right for federal blue box 180s ?
It should be dead on at 200 yards.
Sighted with this ammo as well

Omg my mosin with milsurp was impressive at that range lol

That sounds about right to me the general rule of thumb I use for cartridges firing in the 2600 to 2800 fps range is if they are bang on at 25 yards expect +2.5"@100, -1"@200, -8"@300 and -24"@400. There are lots of other factors that come into play but this works for about as precise as I am able to shoot at those respective ranges. I have found JBM Ballistics (google) to be pretty accurte in determining trajectory.

And why would you use 180 gr cup and core bullet for long range Elk hunting?

Why not 150 gr Vortex with Barnes TTSX bullet? Or Hornady Superformance 150 gr GMX.
Old rules do not apply to monolithic bullets.
180 gr will loose to 150 gr as starts slower and drops more and carries less energy at 500y.

From 30-06 you need 150 gr at minimum 3000 ft/sec set 3" high at 100 y for about same at 200 , low -2.55 at 300 and low -14 at 400, -33 at500.

So you don't worry about holding over or anything up to 325 -4.84 low.

And for above trajectory 25 y should be 0 or right on.

Monolithic bullets penetrate deepest and retain almost100% weight.

Expensive, really? Depends what you driving but you can't drive very far for price of 40 -50 $those days.

Came back from Elk camp with 2 Elk this year we fired 2 Barnes TTSX bullets to get them.

mostly cause i dident get a moose draw..we hunt moose and if we see a bull elk it is generaly craphouse luck ..cows sure more often, this year i have seen bulls twice ..only cause im looking for a cow ..and have seen 3 bull moose ..all 3 woulda been dead with the ammo im useing , the first woulda got a headshot;)

but you also give me stuff to think about:D and thats kinda why i posted the thread

I just went through the process of re-sighting in my P17 in 30:06. Did the zero at 25yds and then pushed out to 100yds. two clicks on the scope and i was zeroed at 100yds. My P17 loves the federal blue box 180gr and groups 2inches at 100yds. Not sure I'd want to push those out past 300yds as they start to drop pretty fast. The accubonds definitely have much better long range ballistics. As mentioned in a previous post, check out the Winchester ballistics calculator.

For the 10-12 inches to the right, check your finger position on your trigger. I've seen it where too much finger on the trigger can pull you off center. an inch or two at 100 yds can easily equal 10-12 at 400+ yards.
