Hi all CGN reloaders.
I'm new to reloading 30-06. I have fair collection of different brands of brass.
Winchester, RP, Hornady, FC, and some PMC,PPU and GFL.
My question is which of these brands is more resistant to stretching and has longer case life?
Which brand is more consistent?
Appreciate any input.
These cases are mostly once fired so its not new brass by any means
Thanks

Case stretching is governed by the rifles headspace setting and how far you push the case shoulder back during full length resizing.

Your head clearance is equal to the amount of shoulder bump during sizing and normally you want .001 to .002 shoulder bump.

Below is a illustration of full length resizing and you want to adjust the die with a bolt action to .001 to .002 below the red dotted line.

I would pick whatever brand of case you have the most of for starters and sort the cases by weight if you are shooting at longer ranges.

If you are hunting in the woods at shorter ranges then you try using mixed brass.
When you are standing on your hind legs shooting at a running deer in the wood you would never see the difference in brass.

Here in central PA. and hunting in the woods the average deer is shot at 40 yards. And the most popular rifle is a Remington 760 pump. (Amish machine gun) :d

Imperial brass lasted a long time for me. Winchester and Hornady has also always been very good. Never had a problem with Remmy brass - but their ammo QC sucks. Federal is good for one or two reloads then I don't even bother recycling it.

I've been in central PA, it's a bit like BC, in the sense that there is basically nothing but forests rivers and hills. The only time I can see a shot at a deer being beyond 50 yards is on a logging road or a farm.

I bought 50 hornady 30-06 cases last spring, which only lasted 4 reloads each before beginning to split, some around the body of the case & others splitting the neck. These were all lighter loads so the brass must have been too hard. Im used to getting 10 reloads or so out of my brass. Bought some Lapua brass since then to try.
