30-06 Case Indent

Hello all,

I have a recent issue with the cases coming out of my Winchester 30-06. There is an indent (not a bulge) close to the base of the case but the interesting thing is the indent doesn't go all the way around the case, it's only on one side.
 
A photo would help. Make sure your chamber is dry, free of oil, grease etc. It sort of sounds like a lube dent you get when too much lube is used in resizing brass for reloading.
 
Many semi auto guns dent cases when they eject, either hitting part of the rifle or something on the ground.

I assume your Winchester is a bolt action?

Were these cases dented after being fired? If they were did you eject the case to the ground or remove it from the action by hand?
 
Yes it is a bolt action and no the brass didn't hit the ground when it was ejected. I have a whole box of brass that has the exact same markings and it started only after my gunsmith had it apart to re-blue the barrel.
 
Dirtydodge99 sent me a picture. In my opinion H4831 was right, looks like case stretching caused by excessive headspace. I would have your gunsmith take a look at it.

That doesn't look like excessive headspace to me. It looks like minimum dimension brass fired in a maximum dimension chamber. The brass ahead of the heavier case head has expanded to fit the chamber.
 
It is just the expansion ring. It is where the transition is from the solid head to the casewall. Case expands, solid head doesn't. Looks normal enough.
 
Virtually all my reloaded/resized cases look like that to some degree.

Nothing to worry about, just inspect them after resizing each time, once had 300 win mag cases crack there a bit after 6-7 reloading.
