30-06 enough for moose?

I know what you mean... I used to use my 50 for moose and elk but now I feel I owe it to the animals I hunt to kill them cleanly so I switched to 30mm. Now I am confident they die quickly and painlessly and I no longer have to gut them either so it's win-win!
Sounds pretty handy alright. I'll bet that if you place your shot right, you don't even have to quarter them. You must have a mean muzzle brake on that rifle of yours.

Yup it works have taken 4 with mine over the years. The 3006 will drop a moose. So will a 270 and a 3030

I've seen both take a moose. A Cree fellow I know in northern Ontario only uses his pre 64 Winchester 3030.

Heck the 303 has been used for decades on moose. My uncle is still using one.

I like the 180 grain Nosler partition. The other is the Hornady 220 grain round nose with 4350 powder. At 135 paces away it dropped him nose first into the ground.

The 338 well nothing wrong with it. I might flinch at the recoil.

06 for moose

If records were kept, I'd wager the rifle that killed the most moose in Canada is the good old .303 British, followed by the 30-30. In Scandinavia, the 6.5 X 55 is the all-time favourite, and it's quite a bit less powerful than the '06.

My wife shot a 7 year-old cow moose with an AKS in 7.62 X 39 at 218 paces. 3 shots in the lungs, the moose dropped about 150 yards away. I do have to admit that the X39 is too light for moose. It's just that it was my wife's first time out for moose, and I hadn't had time to get her to practice on one of my other rifles, so she used the gun she was familiar with, the AK.

The 7.62 x 39mm only comes up light because of the factory selection of bullet weights. Ballistically it's superior to the 30-30.

30-06 and the moose didn't know what hit him. 180gr Barnes X-bullet. dropped on the spot, the placement of back of the head may have helped. No ruined meat.

For years all i used was 243 ( 95 gr Partitions) and i dont recall a moose or a caribou ever needing a second shot. And there has been lots of them
I use a 6.5x55 now, more than enough gun for moose as well.
Shoot it thru the lungs and give them 15 minutes before you go and look.
It will not be very far from where it was standing when it was hit.

Detective Special, and all you guys who think that a 30-06 is good enough for moose - it's time someone explained some of the more intricate aspects of big game hunting philosophy to you guys: We justify owning multiple hunting rifles by "needing" different cartridges and rifles - long range shooting, bush gun, lightweight, big bore, mountain rifle, truck gun, all-round rifle, bean field rifle, all weather rifle, and just about anything else you can think of. Of course 90% of it is BS, but there's a very good reason for it.

Bottom line - a 30-06 is a fine all-round choice for Canadian big game hunting and you gave your friend really good advice. Just don't do that again, it could cause trouble. For instance, if my wife ever reads these threads it's gonna be real hard to justify the 2 gun safes full of hunting rifles residing at my house, and i think she's already suspicious... wink wink, nudge nudge.... get it??? ;)

Go with the magnum. Real men shoot magnums and magnums kills game deader from any angle or distance. I read that in a shooting magazine once or twice.
:p

Seriously, 30/06 + 180gr bullet = dead moose.

Naw StoneHorse, real men shoot 30:06's and know how to use their firearms effectively. Pussies need magnums hoping that the magnum will makeup for their lousy shooting. Eventually most go back to the good old reliable '06.

From this statement I can tell Fred has killed a few! My buddy uses his 6.5x55
sporter and I have killed a few with different calibers (7.62 x 54r .270 .303 .300 win mag). I like the 6.5x55 It fills the gap between 303 and 308 perfectly, and its not a shoulder bruiser like my .300 win mag.

Methinks if you loaded some Barnes TSX you would have a handy white tail or mule deer cartridge for out to 200 yards.

For Moose I'd use my 6.5x55. :)

OMG . I didn't think of that. Honey, I NEED a new rifle because.........

I have heard the older guys who worked in the lumber woods say that for camp meat they would kill moose with 22 rimfires.
They would sneak up on them and quietly put 3, 4 or 5 bullets in the lungs ,then wait for moose to lay down and die.
3 Ps
Practice,Placement, and Patience.

I asked my dad once. Do you ever shoot them a long ways away.?
He said NO, I have to walk over to paunch ( clean) anyway. I'll wait til I get closer to shoot. Its not how far you can hit them. Its how far you have to lug it.!!!
He always used a 303 British til I bought him a 30-30 marlin. Then he used that.Aside from an occasional finish shot ( didnt wait)I never saw him fire a second shot.

Is 50 cal BMG good enough for mouse? not if you shoot it in the tail!

Hey, not so sure about that.
One time a bull moose jumped up in front of me in the bush. I saw his head, andtlers, then he ran straight away, with his head held down. I aimed my 30-06 right at his tail and let fly. He went only about twenty feet, then collapsed.
