Just as I suspected. Most guys posting on this thread have never shot a moose.

I've never been much of a moose hunter. Pretty much restricted myself to ones that stand on or near a road or uphill from the road at close range.
I never could figure out why people can't say anything good about the '06 with bad mouthing the magnums.
If you meant "without" bad mouthing the magnums it may be because some people resent being told by people who should know better that the non-magnum calibers are inadequate for the uses they are put too. There are VERY few circumstances as a hunter in Ontario where a 30cal magnum is the better choice for hunting over a 30-06. There's nothing wrong with the magnums but they are not necessary for game around here... Unless you are talking polar bear where the 30 cal magnums are a bit light for the task anyway. If you are out West and have opportunities for very long range shots (and the ability to reliably make them) then by all means use a 300Win Mag or whatever but for a whitetail 120m away you are just adding noise, recoil and cost to the equation. My 2 cents.
Now if people would just admit that the magnum makes them feel like they are more macho or deadly or whatever it is that would be cool too. Just don't pretend that the 30-06 is not more than enough gun for almost all North American hunting. I use a 308 and I've never had a deer or moose laugh at me when I hit them...

Can trolling get you banned from this site?

Sorry been away with family matters. Now to the important stuff...
Granted neither one of these rifles is a long range wonder. And I'm not going back over the numbers as you have already covered that.
You just nailed it on the head why I said the the 7.62 is superior to the the 30-30: The spitzer bullet. That being said I'm not including the the Hornady cartridge as it over came the flat or round nose normally required in a tube magazine.
And for the record (not that anybody accused me of it). Did you notice I never used the words 'greatly' or 'vastly' in front of superior. The remark was made as some think the the 7.62 is a poor choice as a hunting round; and that is true if the wrong bullet is used. But when the correct bullet choice is made it will do anything the more commonly accepted 30-30 will do. And as a matter of opinion I think it may just do it a little better. I have never conducted controlled testing to prove this point though...![]()
The moose I killed with .270 and 7 mil didn't ask for refunds either, but that doesn't change that whatever my ought six will do at 200, my .300s do a couple hundred yards farther out. Whether I, or you "need" that doesn't change anything. It does make it hard for me to justify reaching past 4 .300s to snag a 30-06 or .308 from my own rack though.
You must have a hell of a .300M when a couple hundred fps (maybe) will get you a couple hundred more yds over an 06!

Magnums never made me feel "macho" or "deadly" but using different cartridges is fun...
People that whine about magnums probably just can't handle them. They should stick to cartridges with less horsepower. Both types of cartridges will kill game...
