30-06 for moose

I've been hunting moose for 44 years, over half of them with the 30 06. I personally wouldn't go too cheap as lightly built bullets can open up too much & not penetrate enough. My choice would be Remington with core lokts or federal premium with nosler partition. These bullets are what I use in my hand loads for hunting, & then cheaper bullets for target shooting.

Trick I found with moose is where you hit them . IN THE HUMP , anything that penetrates to the spine will drop them in there tracks
My first moose ( 30 years ago ) shot it twice through the boiler and it ran 200yds through a crazy terrain and fell between 2 trees ,had to saw a tree out of the way just to gut it then it took six hrs to get it back to where I shot it in dirty pieces

I haven't had the pleasure of taking a moose with a 30-06 but my dad has taken more than I could count. He likes 180g core lokts but has had great success with winchester super x power points or pointed soft points in 150g and 180g. I think those winchester bullets are pretty fast expanding too. I think anything you load into your 30-06 other than maybe a varmint bullet will make any moose go down like a ##### if you hit it right.

I'm of two schools of thought on this sort of thing..

1. enjoy and appreciate the guys who pursue the ideal caliber, bullet, trajectory etc.

2. many guys over think it. Just about any choice works in the standard stuff short of FMJ.

+1. Shot placement is much more critical than a 15 grains difference in your ammo. Take the one that you shoot the best with and hit it at the right spot.

Accuracy - is first and foremost. And I've used 165 SGKBT plenty of times on moose and they work fine... Since then I have included Hornady 180 sst. Sight the gun in and ensure that the barrel is fouled.

Interestingly the local Canadian Tire has Sako ammunition in stock. IIRC it is about $45/box. I'd try it just for fun.

My wife shot a huge cow moose with a 7.62 X 39 with 125 gr. soft point. 3 very quick shots in the lungs, and it would have stayed right there if my wife had waited a bit before trying to get to it. AN uncle of mine used to kill several moose per year with a .22. Mind you, they were snared, but the .22 did the trick anyways.

It is actually real Sako ammunition in Sako boxes.

this the ones they have in 30-06 and 180 gr so a lot of different ones.

do you have more info?

with corelockt at $34 sako at the price you have are a bargain and you can reuse the brass ....

There are plenty of perfectly suitable options. The Remington Core-Lokt is a good, fairly cheap factory choice. Lately I have been using 165 gr Speer Hot-Cor in front of 50.0 gr IMR 4064. No complaints.

Just to point something out. I've been party to a few moose on the ground and a couple have had gross wounds. In the hump.

Shoot your moose in the boiler the first time and you'll not pack far and he'll die quickly.
