30-06 is boring

The irony is that if the '06 was an obscure wildcat, it would probably have a cult following.

It's a good cartridge, but yes, it's boring because it's so common. One plus is that it's easy to convert a rifle chambered for it into a 9.3x62. :)

keep this rifle as is.
One day.....the pea thrower will have great value for you, your family, your souvenirs....
there`s absolutely nothing wrong with this caliber, but your subconsious is telling you differently.....

Its time for you to buy YOUR rifle, You like the 6.5x284, go get one, save your money and make your dream come true.

Personally I always had an eye on the Savage Predator, but this is me......

I've killed many hundreds of head of big game with a 30-06 and still find it boring. Its just a middle of the road 30 cal, and does about what you'd expect a middle of the road 30 cal to do. Its better than the slow ones and less than the fast ones. There's sure nothing special about them.

I beg to differ. Anytime somebody gets to say “I’ve killed many hundreds of head of big game with it”, whatever they were shooting is pretty special :)

If you get bored with a excellent selection of rifles chambered in it, more ammo offerings than one can imagine and field dressing animals, yea I guess it's boring..

that boring 30-06 you call boring has shot more big game around the world ,than a lot of more powerful and larger calibers

The irony is that if the '06 was an obscure wildcat,...... it would probably have a cult following......

The .25-06 began as a wildcat.....and now does have a growing cult following...and I'm in it....;)

I've shot .30-06 for 35 years through Husqvarna's. Long range accuracy never an issue. 55 through to 220grain bullets.
Seems everyone I've ever met while hunting or discussing hunting has successfully used a .30-06 at some time in their life.
Just didn't need that power/recoil for whitetail so I settled into a .25-06 with zero regrets...

I think your pops might have been joshin you a bit, the 30-06 isn't underpowered, it's just obsolete. As a versatile all-around cartridge for people shooting cast loads, or they got a rifle given to them in this caliber it's fine. You can find ammo for it anywhere, and there's lots of loads available. The issue with 30-06, and why it was replaced, is because it's obsolete. New powders and modern steel chambers have kept it on life support, along with modern bullet construction.

The main issue I have with 30-06 is that it has the trajectory of a basketball.

It's also a long action cartridge, the bolts usually wobble and require extra effort to cycle. This also makes the rifle longer and heavier, and can reduce accuracy if scoped.

You'll rarely see a 'tactical' style rifle chambered in this, if that's your thing.

With the 308win cartridge, there is no reason to own a rifle in 30-06. Insert comments like "Well I been using it for X years blah blah" below

Fail!!! In several statements contained above.

I dare say most( if not all) of us participating in this discussion will be obsolete long before the .30/06 is.

...my 06 sits in the corner of the gun cabinet and is lonely...none of the other rifles will talk to it...piles of 06 cartridges languish on shelves in co-op stores and quik stops across the nation...06 hunters sit singly in bars and taverns across the back bush wondering where tommy douglas has gone...and YOU have the audacity to ask if the 06 is boring!? ...that's it my day's ruined

Just found this,

"Grandpa's Lesson."

Pappy took to drinkin' back when I was barely three.
Ma got pretty quiet. She was frettin', you could see.
So I was sent to Grandpa and he raised me up real good.
He taught me what I oughta and he taught me what I should.

I learned a heap 'o lessons from the yarns he liked to tell.
There's one I won't forget because I learned it 'speshly well.
There jist ain't many folk who live a peaceful, carefree life.
Along with all the good times there'll be lotsa grief and strife.

But there ain't many troubles that a man caint fix
With seven hundred dollars and a thirty ought six."

Grandpa courted Grandma near the town of old Cheyenne.
Her daddy was cantankerous - a very greedy man.
He wouldn't give permission for a fancy wedding day
'Til grandpa paid a dowry - biggest ever people say.

Her daddy softened up when Grandpa said that he could fix
Him up with seven hundred dollars and a thirty ought six.

Grandpa herded cattle down around Jalisco way.
Ended up behind some iron bars one dusty day.
Seems the local jefe craved my Grandpa's pinto mare.
Grandpa wouldn't sell her so he lit on out of there.

Didn't take much doin' 'cept a couple special tricks
Plus seven hundred dollars and his thirty ought six.

Then there was that Faro game near San Francisco Bay.
Grandpa's cards was smokin' hot and he took all one day.
He woke up nearly naked in a ditch next early morn'.
With nothin' but his flannel shirt, and it was ripped and torn.

Those others were professionals and they don't play for kicks.
He lost seven hundred dollars and his thirty ought six.

He begged some woolen trousers off the local storekeep there
Who loaned him both a pony and a rifle on a dare.
He caught those thievin' cardsharks at another Faro game.
He got back all his property and also his good name.

He left one bleedin' badly and another mostly lame.
My Grandpa's trusty rifle shoots just where you choose to aim.

Grandpa's slowin' down a bit and just the other night
He handed me his rifle and a box sealed up real tight.
He fixed me with them pale grey eyes and this is what he said,
"You're awful young but steady too and I will soon be dead.

I'll bet this here old rifle and this honest money too
Will come in mighty handy just as readily for you.
There jist ain't many folk who lead a carefree peaceful life.
Along with times of happiness, there's always woe and strife.

But.....ain't many troubles that a man caint fix
with seven hundred dollars and his thirty ought six."

I don't own an 06 but did at one time and thinking about it again.

As Eagle Eye has pointed out there are several inaccuracies in your statements. However just to enlighten us readers please define your version of "obsolete", and how it relates to the 30-06 cartridge.
