30-06 is boring

The 30/06 boring? Only if you think what has worked for the past 112 years as boring, then I suppose you are right. Having said that, I enjoy my .308 Win but when I'm hunting in grizz country, I feel more comfortable holding my 30/06.

Just out of curiosity because the 6.5-.284 was mentioned I checked the nosler data to compare it to the ol' 06. Using a 150 .30 cal ballistic tip with a .435 BC at 3050fps against a 6.5mm 140 grain ballistic tip with .509 BC at 2950fps. Velocities were both top according to Nosler data. Out to 500 yards they were nearly identical except the 06 had an energy advantage till they were almost identical at 500 again. Guys may shoot further but in the sake of hunting bullets and realistic usage of aforementioned ballistic tips, I see no real advantage to leaving the 06 in the case. I only compared the two because the 6.5-.284 was mentioned as new and "not boring". I'm not seeing it.

As Eagle Eye has pointed out there are several inaccuracies in your statements. However just to enlighten us readers please define your version of "obsolete", and how it relates to the 30-06 cartridge.

Or perhaps he could explain how the '06 has a basketball trajectory, yet he prefers the .308 with its significantly reduced powder volume. By the way, neither my long action or my magnum length rifles have actions that are any less smooth than short actions of similar quality.

Not sure how anybody manages to kill anything with their basketball trajectories and "inaccurate when scoped" 3006

When I'm out meat hunting, on a day when I might encounter anything from a white tail, moose, mule deer, elk or maybe even a grizzly,
I'll take one of my 30'06's over any other caliber.

With almost anything else, (except maybe a 7MM or 300WM), I'd feel either under-gunned or over-gunned.

When I finally "kick the bucket" and head to those "happy hunting grounds" they can bury me with my trusty 30'06.

Fail!!! In several statements contained above.

LOL, yeah his post was pretty hopeless.

New powders are what made the "not obsolete" 308win to even come remotely close to the performance of the venerable 30-06. Obsolete? The supposedly advanced 308win uses bullet stabilizing technology that hails from the 15th century... I hope he was being facetious.

So darned boring!

But I don't know why I have so many of the damned things!! :)

NAA.

Boredom is a symptom of complacency. The 30-06 does what it needs to do, as expected, every time it needs to do it. It doesn't give the added excitement of a gun that requires a bit more coddling to put food on the table or holes in paper. It just works.
If it was me, I would leave the rifle be. You never know when you need a rifle that just works and needs to work reliably. Buy another cheap surplus M98 if you want to start experimenting with different calibers, for about $300 you can get chambered barrels for M98 actions.

Sure, good enough just like just about everything thing else. Nothing special about it at all. I've got 5 of them, and can't work up much enthusiasm for the cartridge. It's good enough for a lot of things, better than some and comes up short compared to others. M

Yes, comes up short compared to Magnums at long range, we all know that. Velocity isn't everything. 95% of hunters couldn't take advantage of anything more than a 30-06. Modern scopes with custom dials, and knowing your range and trajectory, a competent shooter can easily kill game out to 500 yds with a 30-06.

A 30-06 rifle is a tool like a hammer is a tool. How can a tool be boring? It's either adequate, inadequate or overly adequate for the job.

Settled on a Leupold FX-II Ultralight 2.5x20mm for my new 30-06 Bavarian Carbine. :d

With precise shot placement using proper bullets within its effective range it's an adequate heavy game rifle. But if Yeti shows up when I'm Moose calling...
