That hair is spectacular. I’ve owned 30-06’s before and nothing wrong with it. If I did it over again I’d buy a 308/or a 300 win mag for a 30 cal offering. 7mm, 6.5 mm and 6mm are really nice though as well. 30 cal for a bush rifle though
30-06 gets it done. Nothing boring about that.
If the 30-06 were introduced today it would fail.
Ya, I guess. Kinda backwards logic because without the 30/06, there would not be a bunch of other cartridges based on and inspired by the 30/06.If the 30-06 were introduced today it would fail.

The 30-06 and the Springfield were basically stolen from the Mauser in the first place. Which of the cartridges developed from the 30-06 do we really need? The .270? That was a big deal in 1927 but the WSM and Weatherby eat it alive. The 35 Whelen? The "Poormans H&H" was something when Springfield actions and surplus brass were everywhere but it doesn't stand up to the real H&H. It was in th ebargain bins about a year after they legitimized it. 280? That has struggled to exist through name changes but is never going to match the 7 Rem. Who needs it? Ditto the 25-06. The 30-06 is just an ordinary 30 caliber that fits in between the .308 and the 300 WSM. What's special about that?
When the '06 was making its reputation it was sort of special. It was a lot better than a 30-40 Krag, and a monster compared to a 30-30. The 300 H&H was a rare and expensive foreign thing that few had seen.
Always found it funny that people say "thirty aught six" and then bestow their wisdom by saying it was developed in "nineteen oh six".
You can't rewrite history so what is really your point? You don't like the 30/06? Okay, fine. I'm not fond of the short, super short magnums, 17 cal and a few others, so what?
My point is that there is nothing special about it, nothing particularly interesting about its capabilities, it fills no special niche, and is just a cartridge that isn't much different than others. That doesn't necessarily make it good or bad, but does make it boring.
By your logic, as there are so many cartridges in existence today that none have a niche to themselves and all have other ballistically similar options, I presume that you find all cartridges and by extension all rifles "boring". In which case this is an odd place to spend your time![]()
.30/06... one rifle that does everything... and does it reasonably well... yes, that is boring. From the 125 AB & 130 TTSX in the mountains and on the prairies to 200 SP & 220 SS Partitions on big bears, moose and buffalo... you scrifice little to the ideal choices for each scenario... yup... boring.
Your're funny. In one sentence you are saying the 30/06 is boring, nothing special and ballistics similar to many other cartridges. Then you suggest getting rid of dozens of commercially available cartridges. Having only a handful of cartridges to choose from, now THAT would be boring, LOL!There are countless cartridges out there, and we could get rid of most of them and it wouldn't change much. Most of our game isn't particularly big, or tough or very far away. Much of the time it doesn't what you use within reason.
