30-06 is boring

Sheephunting in a couple weeks, so did a range trip this morning to check the boring ol 3o-o6. Boringly consistent and accurate with 168TSXs. 😉

There are many dumb reasons for thinking a specific cartridge is not suitable for you to use, but the fact that YOU find it "boring" is one of the dumbest. If you find something (anything) boring, it is simply your problem, not an issue with the thing whatsoever. Boredom is always self inflicted, and is curable only by changing your own prejudice.

CRF M70 30-06?? That’s a gem. I had a 264 win on a CRF M70 and regret selling it to this day. If you had game within 4-500 yards, it wasn’t a question of whether you’d hit them. It was a question of whether you wanted to use your tag.

Inherited guns are very cool. Heirlooms like that are a lot more useful then a China cabinet, or vehicle that will eventually become a burden. Several years ago I had a cooper with a New Zealand walnut stock built, and it was followed by a couple more with stocks from the same tree for my sons. My stock came from a different tree, so I should order another one perhaps. I did buy an extra blank from it, but haven’t ordered anything yet.

Here is the blank their gun came from.

If you think the .30/06 is boring . . .
try shooting from field positions,
then try shooting further from field positions,
try shooting in competition,
try hunting larger game,
try using your .30/06 in self defense drills,
try shooting with iron sights,
try working up loads with components you haven't tried before,
try shooting cast bullet loads,
try small game hunting during the off season,
tape a card with the sight corrections for different loads on the side of the rifle's butt, then try using them, at a variety of ranges, all in one range session,
make up a drop table for your load, then prove the data out to the range at which hitting a 24" target is no longer possible,
stay at it until it is possible,
try shooting at flying clay birds (provided you have an unlimited range to shoot across, mine is called Hudson Bay).

If you enjoy rifle shooting, the possibilities are nearly limitless, but if all you do is shoot groups from the bench at a 100 yard range, yep the .30/06 is boring, along with a bunch of other cartridges.

I use a faster load out of 2 rifles, unmodified. The internal box magazine is very forgiving.

-Winchester Model 70 Pre 64
-Weatherby Vanguard 24"

They already have a longer throat and a 1:10" twist from the factory.

Basing this on Berger’s recommendation of a 1:9 twist minimum. I don’t know of any factory .30-06 with a 1:9 twist.

I shoot the Berger 230gr OTM and they stabilize with a 1:10" twist. I have even stabilized a 225gr Hornady out of a Tikka T3 308 with 1:11 twist.

4AW has made many videos with his original remington barrel and it performed very well.

Some say the 1:9 is optimal.

Obviously, a longer barrel and higher velocity is ideal.

I really like the way you think! Some good ideas for training right there Boomer thanks. As you say if the 30-06 is boring then there’s a whole slew of boring rounds out there.
