I loaded up 180gr hornady sp with 47gr of imr 4895. I am getting speeds around 2320fps. My gun is a remington 30-06 742 CARBINE. Would it be fine to load 48gr? I have seen some manuals list 48 as the max and then I have seen 50 the max so im not sure . Thanks.

The Hodgdon Reloading Data Center also lists 48 as max for IMR 4895 with a Sierra 180 SPBT. As long as you're not seeing/experiencing any signs of excessive pressure, you're OK to try.

But you're not likely to gain all that much in speed as their data shows 45.0 @ 2,555 and 48.0 @ 2,680.

did you work that load up, or is it just something you figured to jam together to see if it would work? If you worked it up and you are getting satisfactory results with it, why bother going for the extra 100fps and possibly lose it? If you did not work it up, then I would start at 45gn and work up to 48 by 1/2 gn increments, until I got the group I wanted or pressure signs made it dangerous. I have usually found the groups get best somewhere around the half-way mark, then open up, then close up again as I approach max. Most of my best groups are above max listed loads. BUT I WORK UP TO THOSE!

I had a Remington carbine with a 18" barrel. Velocity was much lower than I expected. I had a peep rear sight and a red fibre front sight on it. It was my heavy rain/snow rifle. It would have done the job.

FYI, I get 2625FPS (measured) from 54gr H4350 and 180gr Rem SP... or Hornady 180gr interlocks..

That sounds about right.
My 30-06 Husqvarna takes 56 grains of IMR4350 to get to 2700, the velocity a 30-06 with 180 grain bullet is supposed to achieve with 4350 powder.
With 4350, as well as other slow powders, I have always found that the heaviest loadings are the most accurate.

I load for a Rem 742 from the early 60's. it was my brides late Fathers gun. Not a real reliable firearm at its best, rails wore hard and it is a b!+€h to have it slide back and pick up a round and rechamber it. I have a round that doesn't drive the bolt back to hard and has enough blow back to push it forward and lock in.

I use a 150 or a 180 gr Hornady with H4350 powder and did some work ups and downs. Factory ammo did not work well in it either .

ok thanks guys .. Factory rem cort lokts are moving at 2700fps so i wanted my 180's to get to 2500fps. Im fine with 308 velocities out of my '06 because of the carbine barrel but im not wanting to be shooting .32 special lol I guess I will load up some more hotter ones.

It can vary from one gun to another. The books only give starting points and maximums but don't take into account barrel wear or length. A load needs to be worked up individually for each rifle while looking for pressure signs. As mentioned above, 30.06 seems to work well at maximum pressures, however, Maximum pressure does not equate to maximum accuracy. I'm quite happy to sacrifice a hundred feet per second to keep 5 shots through a nickel at 100 meters. In general, with my 30.06 loads the best accuracy I find is just a step down from the maximum pressure load.

The older and more used the 742's get the more peened the rails and receiver gets.A smith can smooth some of this out but if severe enough the gun becomes a wall hanger or parts gun..........Harold

Your velocities seem real low.

I'd reccomend RL-17.

I can get well over 2800 with RL-17 and 180's out of my 742 (rifle, not carbine), and well over 2600 with 210 grain Bergers.

Just me, but I would not settle for 2300 fps with 180's out of a 30-06, even if it shot bugholes at 200 yards.

I hear you on that, I did work out a load that is reliable and it works pretty well. I don't like a semi for hunting so I use a Rem 700 in 30-06 for that. I load those a little hotter and and use nosler heads in them.

Just a keep sake to pass onto my boys.

So what kind of velocity do you get?

Never had access to chrono so I can't help you with that? I would think the shorter barrel and semi auto action would lower velocity.

I won't blow smoke up your @$$ and tell you that 742 can shoot sub moa, it doesn't !
