I want to buy my first high-powered rifle, then add a scope and maybe a bipod. I plan to use it mostly for long distance targets.

I'm leaning toward a Remington 700 Tactical, but I'm open to recommendations of other manufacturers.

The choice I'm having the problem with is choosing either a 308 or 30.06. I'm getting the impression there is not very much difference between the two at all, but 30.06 ammo maybe cheaper?

What do you see as the main difference between the 308 and 30.06, and which would you suggest as your first gun of choice?

Long distance? If you want accuracy at long distances, ammo won't be cheap. :p
Most "tactical" type guns will be .308 (Remington 5R, or 700 Police) or varmint guns. It seems .308 has the advantage in target shooting, 30-06 in hunting, but neither by much! :)

It's been mentioned already but there's not really much difference to chose from other than a slightly higher velocity the '06 has. Probably what's going to help you make your decission or choice is what you come across that's available in each caliber and what you see in examples of each that appeals to you. My choice, the '06 for three reasons;
1/ I inherited one from my Dad

2/ That slight edge in velocity
3/ Just cuz

308 all the time but i have to admit my most beautifull rifle is a...30-06... JP.

if its going to be mainly for target shooting, I'd say go 308. If you plan on hunting more later on I say go 30-06 but truthfully they are both go choices.
