30.06 or 308 - CAST YOUR VOTE !! . . .

It's been mentioned already but there's not really much difference to chose from other than a slightly higher velocity the '06 has. Probably what's going to help you make your decission or choice is what you come across that's available in each caliber and what you see in examples of each that appeals to you. My choice, the '06 for three reasons;
1/ I inherited one from my Dad

2/ That slight edge in velocity
3/ Just cuz

Johnn - WOW - Really nice rifle and scope. What make/model?

308 all the time but i have to admit my most beautifull rifle is a...30-06... JP.

Looks awesome !!

They are virtually identical cartridges. The advantage to 30-06 being the higher velocity, can hold a smidge more powder, and much heavier and varied bullet assortment.

You will find in modern firearms the 308 will come with more rifle selection as its the modern adopted military cartridge (and many years ago the 30-06 was down south and most guns came in that).

Ammo for both is plentiful. 30-06 there is a huge following as there is a crap ton of guns around old and new, hugely popular in the hunting market. 308 is plentiful as already mentioned its modern and hugely popular in the tactical or modern shooter market because of its military alignment.

So for me it comes down to what you want. More rifle selection or more bullet selection. They will both reach out to 1km if you like long distances, but you have to know what your doing and do your part right either way you go.

You're going to have to get a moose or some such critter to post with these gorgeous species of yours.
Can't let that Johnn chap hog all the glory.
Maybe a Grizzlie tivelty or whatever these over grown medallions are called.
Fraaaaaaaaaak that is nice.

Anything a 308 can do a 30-06 can do better.

Except fit in a short action and go easy on powder... Personally prefer .308... Someone said that .30/06 has a better bullet selection... HUH??? They both take .308" bullets and they can both be loaded for any of these... With its slight edge in velocity, it could be said that the ought six handles the heaviest bullets better... But the heaviest load I throw is a 168 grain... After that, I move up to .300 NM, .338 Win or .35 Whelen. Since this is your first centerfire I would definitely recommend the .308.

308. It's not better than 30.06 and never will be but more efficient, less recoil, less noise. For the 100 fps in factory 180s Less than 4%, however, there is over 10% powder increase to get that 4%. You can argue or juggle figures all you want but 308 is more efficient. Respectfully. Jim. I can promise a deer at 300 will never know the difference! Flack vest is on!!!!

Both - you are bound to change your mind in a couple of years. Yup...happened to me. Right now, I have a leaning for the 30-06 because of the fantastic performance I get out of the 165 and 150 gr noslers. (I much prefer a mauser action too - if it means anything)

Good luck to you!

My vote is for the .30/06, although I own both. If you want to load bullets heavier than 180s the .308, particularly a .308 with a short throat, is at a disadvantage. If you like 150s and 165s, the .308 will do pretty much anything the '06 will in terms of terminal performance and trajectory.
