30.06 or 308 - CAST YOUR VOTE !! . . .

Those are awesome hunting bullets, but he said he was going to use it mainly for long range target shooting. As per my previous post, it seems as though the .308 Win has the advantage at 600 yards, but the .30-06 gets the nod at 1000 yards. It just depends what you want to do.

It was Dads pride & joy and it was what he was using on our last Moose hunt together in '71.
And, it was what I used a few years ago on my 1st Mule Deer hunt on draw in Alberta with my Daughter & Son In Law.
The .308 is a great rifle to train on. There is endless versions available. Tactical/hunting/target etc.
In 3006,There is next to NOTHING in a tactical platform!
I am presently building a tactical rifle in 30-06. Why? Because i want a little better performance than the 308 can deliver. my goal is to shoot 190gr+ bullets out to 1000 plus yards. the .308 is pretty much maxed out (typically) at 1000.
Also, I have gotten my .308Win to just shy of a mile. Maybe the 30-06 will do better. I guess I will find out. It will be fun to experiment with this.
Just for the record, I shoot a 300WM to a mile a fair bit. So my project is just to see what the 30-06 is really capable of.

.308 over .30-06 (short action, after market stocks, less recoil, standard 7.62x51 for lots of trigger time...).
But... if have a .308 then much reason for .243, .25-06 or .300WSM (prefer .300 WSM over .30-06 as well)...

It doesn't matter.
In a heavy barreled 15 lb benchrest rifle a .308 is probably going to shoot measurably better groups than a 30-06 - think in the range of 0.1" at 100 yds. In a sporting rifle a 30-06 will have slightly better ballistics - think in the range of a couple inches at 300 yds.
In other words - for a sporter weight rifle in the real world it doesn't matter. Flip a coin, ask your mom, buy what you like. There is no wrong choice.

I prefer ,308 because I believe ammo, may be easier to find and I will be using it in a second rifle (semi~auto for plinking etc,), but from my research on ballistics I believe that the 30~06 carries a little better accuracy and energy beyond 400yds but the ,308 has a slight advantage before 400yds,,,
If I were hunting moose 30~06 deer ,308, but really the performance is very close the30~06 can be found more commonly with higher/heavier grain bullets,,,

In my opinion the .30/06 has the advantage at ALL ranges unless you have your heart set on a short, light rifle. Then the .308 in a short action rig is better. With bullet weights of 180 grains plus the .308 isn't in the race either. I don't know where you would have to live in North America that the .308 would be easier to find than a .30/06, both are pretty much like currency even in remote areas. Both are fine rounds but for heavier game and more versatility I think the .30/06 is better unless a small package is your aim. My 2 cents.

What I was getting at is that if a customer was to go to any retail store to buy a tactical rifle in 30-06, you would be shiyte out of luck. NOBODY makes one. Only custom jobs. It just seems strange to me.
Anyhow, I am looking forward to getting my Tactical 30-06 rifle build done! I will also have a bunch of extra barrels for it. 25-06 Rem,270 Win,280 Rem, 30-06 & 35 Whelan.
