30.06 or 308 - CAST YOUR VOTE !! . . .

I would grab a savage or stevens they seem to be good out of the box,oh ya in .308.Then later on you can build up your rifle with heavy barrel, stock etc.Don't forget to let us know which way you went.

Nine pages devoted to this question? C'mon .. .308 and .30-06 .. almost no difference.

Yes, the .30-06 has a longer casing and can hold more powder giving a slight advantage in terms of muzzle velocity and energy.
But does that translate into either being a more effective tool, either hunting or at the range? No.

Now, if you had asked about the .270 vs either .308 or .30-06 .. then you would have significant differences to discuss.
the .270 is really a 7mm-06 .. providing the shooter with a more effective SD, flatter trajectory, excellent accuracy and superb downrange killing power.
But hey, this wasn't part of the question, so I'll just not mention it.

=)

pfffffffffffffft.................real men shoot 8mm Mauser................which was the father of 30-06, and the grand daddy to 308...........

Just ask yourself a few questions, do I want long or short action? Am I going to be professionally competing at 400-600 yards? Or competing at 1000 yards? Or do I just want a decent hunting rifle with factory ammo available everywhere from 90 to 220 grains?

You will come up with the answer yourself.

PS: one more vote for the 30-06, even though I have owned a 308 for almost 30 years and got my first -06 last fall.

;)You have good taste:D, but between the two choice options given, I'd go for the '06. Just happen to have one, the Husqvarna model 4000 light weight I inherited when my Dad passed away:(.

Put it to use a couple of years back on my 1st Mule Deer hunt on draw in Alberta with my Daughter and Son In Law.

I have seen the pics of some of your rifles Johnn, and I would say it is you with excwllent taste. You have some very fine examples of craftsmanship.
