Howdy Folks

I reloaded some .30-06 for my fried the other day. He went to the range and the factoy ammo was shooting something like 2" groups and the stuff I loaded for him was lucky to get 7". I don't have any experence with this round so I'm after suggestions.

Here's what I loaded for his BAR

180 gr Hornady BTSP Interlock
44 gr Varget (starting load, this kicked more than the factory) I weighed every drop to within 1/2 a grain
C.O.L. 3.305 to 3.307" minimum is 3.300"
No crimp. With this load the cannelure is way out of the brass.
Winchester Brass (new full length resized)
Remington 9-1/2 Primers

Anyone have experence with the BAR and reloads that can give me some direction. I want to keep the bullet weight up there for "Cochrane Cow" (moose) hunting.

Thanks

My Belgium BAR 30/06

60gr:H-4831sc
168gr:Berger BT
OAL:3300

3 Shots groups:+or- 1" @ 100 M

I did not tried Varget in 30/06 cause the case is 2/3 full only with Varget.

Not a BAR laod but plenty good...

55 gr IMR 4350
180 Nosler Partition
CCI 250's

Runs consistently sub 1/2 MOA in my bolt rifle, should perform reasonably well in any other.

"...lucky to get 7"..." The rifle doesn't like the load. You can't just pick a load and expect it to shoot well out of any rifle. You have to work up the load. Work up a load using 165 grain hunting bullets(a 165 will kill any game you care to hunt.). The .30-06 loves 165's too. Varget will do nicely.
"...to within 1/2 a grain..." Not close enough. You scale should be exactly on the weight.
"...full length resized..." Required every time for a semi-auto.

Now there's a good load to work around. 54-55ish of IMR4350 works well in many guns. I bet it trims at least 5 inches off your 7 inch "pattern" and likely more.

This recipe does wonders in my bolt. Midland 2100 Parker hale. 1 inch or less at 100 yards.

Varget is too fast, and 1/2 grain is not precise enough for your powder charges.

Try something in the 4350 burn rate range.
