. My No.1A rainbow sits in the back row of the safe nowadays. She comes out once in a while for fresh oil and foddeling!
A .223 will be much closer to your .308/30-6 in trajectory and every other aspect of shooting. You can do meaningful practice out to as far as you will shoot your larger hunting rifle. It will feel, handle and operate similar to your bigger rifle.
A .22LR is inexpensive to shoot and little recoil.
