Will a .30-06 barrel clean up or need to be set back to be re-chambered to .300 Win Mag. The rifle is a donor .338 Win Mag so action or mag work shouldn't be needed? Thanx Harold

The 300 WM is longer and fatter than the 30 06. Questions like this are so easily answered by opening your loading manual...

The make of your donor action will decide if it needs alteration.
The 338 being shorter...

Recut a 30-06 to 300WM chamber does not require set back since the 300WM is bigger all the way. But barrel profile could be a concern. if you cut a longer and bigger chamber in a barrel profiled for minimal weight, you '' may. '' end with a Safety issue.

I did consult a re-loading manual for measurements and my only concern is the neck area.On the 30-06 it is.339"-.340 and the .300 Win mag is all over the map depending on the manual? The rifle is a factory Win 70 classic in .338 that some caveman in QC at the factory, chatter cut the rifling including one missing land almost 4" worth.I sent the gun back to Winchester with a lot of paperwork and an 8 month wait only to have them say it meets their accuracy standard of which they wouldn't specify. It will shoot MOA for 10 shots then is so copper fouled it's useless. Not impressed with Winchester.Anyways I was hoping to take a donor Classic 70 30-06 barrel and turn it into a .300 Win mag.the 24" barrel would be better at 26" but so be it.I just need the external barrel measurement to see if the standard calibers were the same dimensions as the magnums.no other gun alterations should be required being a .338 to start with? Harold

Quite a few sporterized P - 17's (okay U.S Rifle Model 1917 for the purists....) in .300 Win mag out there that seem to not have required any barrel set back as far as I can tell.

Thanx ..........the water gets a little muddier as I talked to a smith that said the Win 70's used to be 1-16 TPI but after Browning they could be 1-32 TPI.............I guess I'll have to get it pulled to check before buying a take-off...Harold
