30.06 to 308 norma mag questions

Ok, so here's the situation, I have a rem 700 in 30.06 that is surplus to my needs and i am looking to turn it into something else without breaking the bank so i would like to use the same barell. I used to have a .308 norma mag that I liked quite a bit (wish I had never sold it!). From some reading on other forums it seems that '06 to 308 Norma mag is possible??? Is that true??

If so, what would need to be done?
what kind of cost am I looking at??
can you buy brass or do you need to fireform some other casing??

You will have to open up your bolt face and may need some tweaking to make it feed well. You can form the brass from 7mm Rem Mag or .338 Win Mag. I guess the cost would be somewhere just north of $200.
 
The quickest and least expensive way to get there would Ybe to sell your 30-06 and buy a 308 Norma. They come up on the EE regularly, and usually the asking prices are sensible.

There have been two here in the last thirty days, not including the one I had, that is now in a new home.

Not an impossible job but not simple. Your bolt face would have to be enlarged to accept the larger case diameter ,probably going to a sako extractor which IMHO is not as desirable as the original extractor in terms of safely handling gases. You could try to find a magnum bolt but these are not easy to come by unless you go to Pacific tool and Gauge and buy one of theirs which is not inexpensive. There is also a chance the cases would not feed well from the original magazine, but 700's are pretty forgiving in this respect. Probably the most economical route is to sell the rifle and buy the one you wish.
 
Trade your Remington 700 for the same but with the Magnum Boltface. [7mm mag, 338 mag, etc]
Then rebarrel to 308 Norma mag.
Little more expensive, but NO feeding issues and no bolt modifications needed.
You can buy a new barrel for a decent price from Jerry [mysticplayer] or a couple of other suppliers on here.
Smithing involved is not exorbitant, and you have exactly what you want.
My 308 Norma was originally a 300 Win Mag with the throat toasted.

Brass is easiest FL sized from .300 win mag .Lube case to the shoulder of where the .308 NM should be then inside neck,FL size in Norma die and trim to length.Piece of cake! Harold
 
Cheapest way would be to trade your rifle for a magnum, then find a barrel.

Or if you can find someone to trade your standard bolt and follower for a magnum bolt and follower, then rechamber your barrel.
 
Selling or trading your '06 and then getting a rifle chambered in 308 NM, as suggested by others would also be my recommendation. Brass, much of mine has gradually been accumulated over the years as well as acquiring quantities of it at local gun shows. There is another possible solution. Contact one of the site sponsors listed at the top of the CGN website page, Henry Nierychlo at Budget Shooter Supply. Not long ago I acquired a Husqvarna in 358 NM. With it came a quantity of brass but I was looking for 'more' and Budget came through for me. I could've formed it from other calibre brass that's around but being a bit of a 'puritan' where head stamps are concerned, I wanted the real thing. Henry at Budget has also come through on a few occasions in getting me other hard to find brass.
