Well my 2 buddy's and me were lucky enough to get a shared bull hunt this year.My buddy tagged a 4x4 on opening day at the end of a cutblock. He said he was about 50 yrds, one shot with his rem 700 in 30-06.He was using ballistic tips and we couldn't find any pieces of the bullet but you go tell the bullet grenaded. We hunted saturday and sunday,I saw 7 moose all cows. Also 3 bucks but nothing really exciting,a couple of spikers and a small 4 point.

Took the rest of the week off until tonight,I finished all the stuff I had to do so I figured I'd go up for a quick evening hunt.We live about 15-20 minutes from our draw area. It's raining pretty steady with lots of fog when we get up there at about 4 pm.We'd been doing some pretty heavy hiking on the weekend so we new where they were hanging out.Driving to where we where going to hunt,I spotted 2 moose in the thick lodgepole.I jumped outta my truck as the moose were running away.I grunted a couple of times and one of them stopped. We crept closer but I couldn't see the head of the moose. My buddy was more off to the side and he said it's a bull shoot him.I put the scope on him and the moose took a couple of steps being thoughtful enough to turn sideways and give me a perfect broadside shot at about 150 yrds. One shot with my Ruger mk 11 30-06 and he quivered walked about 20 feet and crumbled.I was using the winchester silver tips 180 grains.Found the bullet on the inside of the hide,it's a perfect mushroom.I didn't like what that ballistic tip did to my buddies moose but I could ask nothing more of this silver tips. This was my first moose by the way a 5x4.We had some pretty tough dragging through some pretty heavy windfall.I'll try and get some pics up tommorrow.Deer are much easier

Ballistic Tips are not bad for deer.........
Depends I've seen Fallow hit by 120 gn ballistics from a 6.5 and it looked like a mine victim (as in lain on one) the chest was awful and frags shredded the intestines, with a ruminant that ruined the meat! Put me off ballistics for life. I am using up my stock of 223 ones on targets now!

I think he just went into the gunshop and picked out the most expensive ammo he could find.I think he paid $45 for his I paid $25 for mine.I showed him the differance with the wounds and told him to use them up on targets.I used these silvertips on a deer last year with the same results.Entry hole nice, exit hole around 3" dia. and you could eat right up to the hole.Lot's of bloodshot and the innards were just pulverized with the ballistic tips.I wouldn't use them on a deer, myself maybe some coyotes. That being said I'm going to give the ole 30-06 a rest for the season now,I've got a 99 in 300 savage given to me this year and I'm going to use that for my deer hunting. It shoots really nice and it's just a pleasure to carry.Nothing against my ruger it has never let me down and it shoots very good I just want to break in my savage.

I've got lots of meat now and a doe draw in Nov which is pretty much a gimme,so I might take this opportunity to hold out for a nice muley buck.In theory I could still get 3 deer, but I won't need that much meat.My brother doesn't hunt but he loves wild meat so I'll try and get him a deer.

Some years I do struggle to process all of the deer that comes through my door. I had a great start to the doe season 3 yea, 3 does in 30 minutes, thick as flies they were. Those were the days before I stuffed sausages and sold them to friends. I generally get through 6 or 7 deer between Feb and august due to getting ready for the august bank holiday BBQ> This year I made 300 burgers, 300 sausages and lit 2 oil drums, one kettle and ran a smoker! 60 guests stuffed themselves for about 6 hours. Still left with more beer than I started! Must defrost and tan the hides!

We had some pretty tough dragging through some pretty heavy windfall

You dragged it out by hand? man - that must have been some work allright :) Even in quarters that's a decent amount of meat to haul, especially 4 times.

Here's a crappy pic of mine,I'm hoping the disposabl's turned out better.

They were 180's
Must have been like being hit by a grenade or mortar round! Any meat left?
I'm looking for silvertips in .311 and 6.5, any weights any ideas if they are available for reloading?

Well he hit him in the rib cage, entry between 2 ribs the exit if you could call it that looked like buckshot.the far side was peppered with small holes and bloodshot.Didn't get into the quarters at all.I'm thinking if he wouldn't have had a broadside shot or if it hit a rib on the way in things would have been a lot worse. The innards were jellied.I would expect a 180 in a 30-06 to punch through unless hitting some major bone at 50 yrds. The silvertip did at 150 yrds.

I'll post a pic of my bullet but my digital is a first generation POS and they didn't turn out very good. It's hard to see in the pic but the bullet is rolled back evenly on four sides making a nice mushroom /clover doesn't look like it's lost any weight.I don't have a scale to weigh it.Maybe if I take it to the sport shop they'll weigh it for me,christ I spend enough money there.

I'm not a reloader yet so I don't know about the availability for reloading but would definately recommend the bullets to anyone.
