30-06 vs 308 ballistics and energy

Ad Topperwein was asked that question as well in the early 1900s
"Just how good are you?"
"I have good days in which I can do magic with a rifle, and I have days in which I should haved stayed in bed." Was his answer

50 plus years of shooting practice and being taught be the best does tend to give 1 an advantage just like any other sport where the participant started very young and kept at it through out his life.

I like Ad's answer to the question.

Ad Topperwein? To mention his name in this post I would expect video and more than a dead headless bird and a 40 pound gun? I once asked a fellow what he thought of R at AT as a smith. His reply was I have heard good and bad. I asked what is the good. His answer, he's good. A asked what is the bad and he replied He is a s**tty smith. Another Ad Topperwein? Ad was great and he was an entertainer. You're just a shooter with a big machine.

Thats kool, so how accurate does your rifle need to be for a sparrows head at 600yds??
That's about 1/2" div by 600 = about .08 of an inch at 100yds
Not counting the other minor factors you described!
So just how good are you ;)
Before you rag on someone, brush up on your basic math skills.

Ad was great and he was an entertainer.

Ad WAS a great, not only a great shooter and entertainer, but a truly remarkable person.
Not for an instant do I consider myself in his league, I was just using 1 of his quotes, which I happen to agree with. Somedays I do well and somedays I don't.

Certainly todays equipment makes precision shooting much easier than in the early 1900s, but a certain degree of skill IS still required.

Your comments based on 3rd hand info baffles me though.
My guns shoot well, if they didn't I certainly would not have a years worth of work on the board, if I am as terrible a gunmaker as you imply I should have been out of business 25 years ago. Maybe instead of spewing 3rd hand info you could at least be man enough to work with 1st hand personal knowledge.
Any time you want to come and shoot with me , say the word. Who knows maybe you can be there on 1 of my good days.

You obviously are not much on guesstimating weight, the rifle in the photos weight 13 lbs not 40

You know as soon as I posted that i knew it was wrong, but figured most could easily see what I was math'ing out. Sorry if I really baffled you ;)

Here's the proper equation so you can follow, 1/2" or .5" (roughly sparrows head) divided by 6 because the shot -> 600yds = .08333, feel free to round it off or change back to inches.

That certainly is a remarkable shot if it can be duplicated.

Don't get too hung up on the weight thing, it was just an exageration. My comment was when you used used Ad's quote in response of how good you were. . You could have simply said I shoot sparrows at 700 yards? As far as the 3rd hand thing I asked for references to good smiths in the Calgary area. Seems they are few and far between. You were not one, unless I was into ultra range stuff. When I specifically asked about you I got the before mentioned which is another form of your Ad quote. Some say you are and some say you are not! I have settled on Eddie Mach for wood and stock stuff and Garry Valla for other needs. I have no doubt that you are a good heavy equipment shot! I also know another good heavy equipemnt shot who has witnesses to say he blew a doe deer in half at half a mile with a BMG. You probably know the guy? Anyway all that stuff does not impress me. BTW it is way off the 308 30-06 topic.
