I have owned them both. The 30-06 has a bit of a margin over the 308 but not much. The 308 has a shorter action and just for arguments sake might be a bit more accurate.

this ones real easy over 180 grains- 30-06- under and up to 308- unless you have an '06 action and can seat the bullets long, you get powder intrusion over 180 in the 308

I chose the 30-06 so I have the extra versatility to handle long, heavy bullets if I choose to load them :)

^ +1 to that. I don't want a versatile gun. If so, then I'd have one gun. A 375. Instead, I can get a deer gun AND a moose gun. Long and short range versions of each. And a short range varmint gun. And a long range varmint gun. And a varmint/deer gun. And a dangerous game gun. And a guide gun. And many more.

Jack of all trades, master of none - isn't that how the saying goes?

This is how I see it.
The 308 is one of the most under rated but not over looked cartridges on this planet. I would not argue the fact with a 30-06 there almost the same, and the 308 in general will out shoot accuracy wise any 30-06 I have owned.
However the 308 at muzzle is only 25% less than the 300 win mag, and in hunting camps around the world the 308 win gets a bad rap.
FYI
Core lock bullets used (ie:)
300 win mag 180s = 3500 foot lbs
308 win 180s = 2800 ft lbs
So the 300 win mag kicks but right WELL! lets look at 500 yards

300 win mag 180s 500 y = 1350 f lbs
308 wim 180 500 y = 1100 f lbs HUMM!
30-06 -----------------= 1161 ft lbs
Is 200 f lbs worth talking about at 500 yards along with accuracy at that range!
As for the 30-06 at long distace500 yards the fps difference is less than 40 fps?
You be the judge!
I don't know why but gets a bad rap but one of the easiest rounds to shoot accurate at 300+ yards with almost the same energy as your Mags and equal to the 30-06.

I like the 308 better.
If I want anything more than the 308 is offering in the 30 caliber I must consiter 300 WM or maybe 30-378. Anyhow, a more ummphy result can be easily get from a 375 H&H.

I choose the 308.

So what's the question here
???From ducks to African Safari
If that's it, you'd have to pick 06 as in africa the bigger gun would always be better.

Ballistics the 06 out preforms the 08 all around but especially when you get into the 165+ range of bullets.
There's 200fps diff between 08 & the 06 in heavier bullets,
some might not call that much  but it's the same diff between a 06 & a 300WM, & surely no-one would call those two basically the same :p

& I sure can't swallow the old 308 inherently more accurate line IN AN AVERAGE hunting rifle! It even requires a competetive shooter with a competion gun to see the accuracy diff! Sure you've seen some accurate 308s but I've seen some accurate 06s to:p

No Animal can tell the Difference from a 06' to .308 , Bothe will do the trick .

Im a big shooter of the .308 I love my BLR and Mauser.
