.30-06 vs .308

I have both, my 308 loaded hot shoots a 165 gr bullet at 2720 out of a 24 inch barrel. my 3006 shoots a 165 2760 fps out of a 22 inch barrel loaded 1.2 to 2 gr from max. im sure I could get another 100+ fps out of it but it shoots well where it is. 10 years ago id have sworn id never own either. to slow drop to much bla bla bla. experience has shown me that faster and flatter is seldom needed. I have come to like the old classics. but I would sell both before I got rid of my 270 and 7mm wsm, both shoot faster and flatter with less recoil and stuff falls over just the same.

This is how I see it.
The 308 is one of the most under rated but not over looked cartridges on this planet. I would not argue the fact with a 30-06 there almost the same, and the 308 in general will out shoot accuracy wise any 30-06 I have owned.
However the 308 at muzzle is only 25% less than the 300 win mag, and in hunting camps around the world the 308 win gets a bad rap.
FYI
Core lock bullets used (ie:)
300 win mag 180s = 3500 foot lbs
308 win 180s = 2800 ft lbs
So the 300 win mag kicks but right WELL! lets look at 500 yards

300 win mag 180s 500 y = 1350 f lbs
308 wim 180 500 y = 1100 f lbs HUMM!
30-06 -----------------= 1161 ft lbs
Is 200 f lbs worth talking about at 500 yards along with accuracy at that range!
As for the 30-06 at long distace500 yards the fps difference is less than 40 fps?
You be the judge!
I don't know why but gets a bad rap but one of the easiest rounds to shoot accurate at 300+ yards with almost the same energy as your Mags and equal to the 30-06.

I'm not so sure about that. A load I use quite a bit in several .300 Wins is an ordinary 180 Ballistic Tip
Or Accubond. Started at 3150 with published loads it's taking right around 2100 fps of energy out to 500 yards. By my reckoning, thats double what you give for the .308. It's a little harder to discount double.

In my experience the easiest calibers to hit with at long range are those that are best in the wind.

you would have to compare apples to apples. the 180 ballistic tip will have a higher bc than the core loc used in above illustration. numbers will be similar to above if the same bullet is used.

My two longest kills in 50 yrs, an elk and an antelope was with a 308 at 400 yards each. For me that's a long shot. I really have to wonder about all of the people that say they can shoot out to 500 yards. I know some can but I highly doubt the percentage is very high.

Would you agree that a .308 with 180 grain Ballistic tip at 2600 is realistic? That works out to 1114 fps of energy at 500 yards.

I stand by my diognosis.;)
