30-06 vs .500 metal plate

Yes but with the trajectory of a 444 it would be hitting that plate at a downward arch. Say 44 degrees :)

Come on now, the 444 is much flatter shooting than the 45/70 trajectory you describe. :slap:

I'm sure it wouldn't be more than 42 degrees. :p

Will you guys knock it off with the insult crap? Nobody said any gun was better than any other for moose - it's just a steel plate.

Can't we serve the BBQ moose ON a steel plate?

Dang I'm getting hungry...

for sure we can:D the first one to quote this-------->(remmys are the best in a pump).....will at there own expence of shipping..recieve a plate of there desired thickness:D ....and i will will also have it cut to the diameter you want:shotgun: :shotgun:

I'm just curious as to what you guys feel the safe distance the plate should be away from you, when shooting high velocity jacketed bullets?
Personally I would want them at least 200yds away and 250 would be better.
I have at least one reason why I say this.

Most high velocity loads will blow right through metal targets at 100 yards, depending on the thickness of the metal. Look at the first pics. Lower velocity rounds may ricochette back at you. I've had .357 magnum and .38 special loads come back at 50 yards. But you are right, it would be safer to move them further out.

I can assure you that a 270WSM shooting a 150 grain PSP at 3/4" steel@106yds, can, and will come back whiirrrrring (jacket and /or core or parts of)
I was standing behind a friend who had just punched a hole through the 1/2" plate and let one rip at the 3/4" plate.A noisy piece of metal went sailing about 30 yds to our right(past us) and went thwack into the berm on the west side of the pit.
Scary! 250yds(at steel) for me from now on! At least on anything thicker than 3/8"

I had fun a few years back shooting holes through 1/4" steel plates with my Contender in .357 Maximum. Cast 158gr @ 2000fps from a 10" barrel. Punched clean through at 50yds.
