30-06. Which rifle is the best in this caliber, and why

I shoot a Weatherby vanguard and it's a pretty nice rifle. Have shot savage 110 & tikka t3 as well. Both were good.

Another question is whether you will be hunting on foot, in a stand, or from a truck to decide if you want a detachable vs hinged floorplate magazine.

Further, If you're recoil sensitive you may want a browning BAR or a Merkel SR1 in semiauto.

Savage Weather Warrior Series... Accu stock, Accu trigger, stainless barrel, drop away hinged floor plate or detachable magazine. Reliable and accurate. Price is good too... Lots to choose from, yet I would consider the weather warrior as one of the best rifles in it's price range. However if you have a bit more then double the amount of cash to spend - get a Sako M-85 Hunter. This one has open sites and can readily accept a scope and mounts. Either rifle will last a long time.

Most of you forgot to read what the OP asked I think since almost everyone is posting entry level cost arms rather than what they feel the BEST is

30-06. Which rifle is the best in this caliber, and why

To me I would probably go with a Sauer 202 outback with the single set trigger and fluted barrel with no sights (nice light and compact rifle), Then buy some EAW mounts and a Zeiss Victory series scope with the integra rail so no rings are needed and scope is easily removed for transport while keeping perfect zero when re installed.

As an added bonus the 202 will allow you to swap to another caliber so you can use the same rifle for many different applications.

my one and only 30-06 rifle is a Ruger No.1 A. She is so sweet, although I wish she was an AB. So, my vote is for a No.1 AB. Good luck, OP. If ya find one, and you need the frt site, will swap ya!

Well this is my nicest and "best" 30-06, unfortunately I have yet to fire it but it sure is purddy anyway..........

I happen to know where there is another in a store ready to go if this is what you are looking for............

I really like the Remington and would go with the wood stock BDL/CDL The action is much smoother with it's high polish and you can bring it out to show off. I have a hard time bring out a plastic rifle to show my friends unless it has a high end synthetic stock. The wood stock rifles people seem to hang onto longer. Suit yourself as to the drop floor plate or the DBM. If you find one that you like without the DBM there are aftermarket detachable mags that you don't have to alter the stock for.
Just my opinion

Neil

Try a Benelli R1 if you want something that's feels good.

As for a Remington 700, I like the BDL DM line, but they're hard to find other than the SPS ones.

Remington Model 760/7600 hands down best rifle for an 3006. For a hunting rifle they are hard to beat. Accurate, fast follow up shots, detachable mag ( if that matters), not expensive ( lots of good used ones out there too) and very reliable.

Ruger Hawkeye is an excellent value, built really well, shoot great, excellent trigger and priced right. surprised I don't hear more good things about them, Sleepers in my opinion. Just do not buy an axis, 770 or the likes. Cant go wrong with all advice given they are all great rifles just personal preference. Don't fall for the "my axis shoots MOA so its just as good as your 1000$ rifle BS. You get what you pay for and there are more things to a rifle than how it shoots, They all shoot good in my experience its the whole package. BTW I like Savage and Remington rifles just not the bottom line ones

If I were looking for another .30-06 I would start by looking for a used rifle on a Mauser action ( Husky, FN, Brno, Parker Hale, etc). If you MUST have a new rifle, my first choice would be a Winchester M70 Featherweight.

This would be my advice.

What he said.

Why not? just had the perfect 30-06 for sale on the EE for $450 - Interarms Mark X commercial mauser, 24" barrel, Excellent shape. Can't think of a better budget 30-06 than that one. Throw an excellent Leupole M8 4x on it and one cannot go wrong.

2nd choice would be a Tikka.

Everyone will give you a different rifle in the 30-06, but till you pick a gun up and feel the weight between the hands, the balance, the general feel, you wil not know?
I hate the odd six calibre in general for being boring, work well though for most anywhere in the world!
I do though have 2 ,30-06 rifles, a FN commercial , with DST's, fells AWSOME but is seldom used ever, has a vintage B&L 2-8 with Bueler adj. mount. I should pass it on to an odd six enthusiast:)
The other one I will never give up a Remington model 30 Express factory set up with peep sights, the best balanced open sighted gun I have to date in a centre fire !
Good luck on your search, just make sure it fits you and balances!

Cheers Dale Z!

For me I love my Browning X-bolt in 30-06. FOR ME...it fits very well and the recoil pad is fantastic. It thumps, but not nearly like some others. Also, the short throw on the bolt is quick and absolutely no worries regarding adequate scope clearance especially with gloves on. That's my 2 cents...

If you're just starting out, I would suggest a savage axis and ordering a Boyd's stock. Bed the action in the stock and you will have a nice hunting gun that can get bumped around and dirty without worry
