While in the process of collecting parts/building a 338-06, I've been reading a lot about the trustworthy 06 cartridge and it being the base for many wildcats. Does anyone here have an 06 based wildcat that they like?
The list is exhaustive in length, but I found one American company that squeezes a .375 and a .411 into an 06 case!!

whoa - deja-vu. Didn't this topic just come up?

Anyway, there's loads of '06 wildcats and derivatives. Most of the Gibbs series, a few JDJ's, and a lot of factory rounds like the 25-06, 270, 280, 35 Whelen

In every calibre from the 22 to the 40, it has been done in one way shape or form. I really like the 6.5-06 and my 7 mystic. Both provide excellent velocity and accuracy for whatever you want to do close or far.

30.06 ACKLEY 180 GR 2990 fps 300 win velocities Most debated of the improved cases but both rifles I've had in this cart have been great. One was built on a Whitworth. One was a custom Win mod 70 and had been owned by Red Hassey and was on the cover of the Winchester custom shop catalogue wayyyyy back.
6.5.06 Just 'bout the same as my 264 win
8mm 06 Great cart stops anything I've pointed it at
280 Ackley aka 7mm 06 Ackley imp (at least that what P.O. called it in his book back whenever (before the 7mm exp or 280 rem was around) Hard to beat this one. 7 mag velocities just ask Rembo or 280 Ackley or the tons of other ppl that have one.

Anyway theres my two bits worth

yes, the 7 Mystic is my version of the 280AI. The shoulder is moved further forward. There is a complete post with pics elsewhere in the Precision forum.

The design was based on readily available dies - 7RM Lee collet delux die set. This keeps a major cost of wildcatting down. Results have been excellent and typical for this wildcat type.

162gr Amax at 2950fps out of a 24" Shilen match barrel. Sub MOA at 1000m.

That'll work...

I have a 30 Gibbs, which gets about as much capacity as is possible out of the '06 case. Actually bought it from Jerry [Mysticplayer] a few years back. It bridges the gap between a 30-06 and the 300 Win Mag [or 308 Norma Mag], and is really an accurate, effective wildcat. Regards, Eagleye.

Eagleye. I'm glad to hear you've had sucess with your .30 Gibbs. Mine is in the process of turning into a .35 Whelen. The Gibbs was the most inconsistent round I've ever loaded for. After 4 years of experimenting the best load averaged over 2". In the '06 that same barrel was under .75 every three shot group. Live and learn

Glockster, do you still have cases from the Gibbs?

An all too common problem when changing an existing chamber is that the next chamber is cut out of line. The reamer has nothing to line up on except the orig chamber. Any movement/chatter/misalignment and the new chamber is cut out of true.

It takes a lot more work for the smith to set up the reamer and bore properly. Plus since this was a factory barrel, the chamber/bore might not have been true with the outside of the barrel. If the chamber was indexed using the outside of the barrel, you got a wonky chamber for sure.

This chamber will never shoot well. You can check for runout of the fired brass. If this is oval or bent, then that is a definite sign. However, the chamber might be true but not line up with the bore so the fired case is fine but any loaded cartridge would be offline when a bullet was sent down the pipe.

You can quiz Guntech. He does a very good job and knows how to line things up.

The next one is the throat. If the chamber had a longer then desired throat, it would never shoot well either.

After playing with many cartridges of all sorts, I can conclude there is no such thing as an inaccurate cartridge (within its intended application). In fact, many bottle neck cartridges I thought poor shooters ended being spectacular.

The key is in the intial chamber cutting and barrel install. Any oops here and doesn't matter if you have 6BR or PPC with a Kreiger barrel spun onto a Stolle/Panda action, wonky chambers don't shoot.

Glockster; sorry to hear about your experience with the Gibbs. What Mysticplayer has said is true though. If your barrel shot ¾" as an '06, then it should have shot just as good as a Gibbs, providing the work was done correctly. My Gibbs shoots ½" regularly with decent bullets, and usually under ¾" with hunting bullets. Regards, Eagleye.
