I thought only the Russian army used the Winchester 95 but I now understand that the Prussian Ulans (Lancers) trained with both the Mauser 98 carbine and the Winchester 95 (apparently 8000 rifles). The caliber used by the Prussian cavalry Win 95 was 30-06.

This according to Wikepedia entry (see below) translated from German...so maybe its true...anyone ever see one?

Lever Action Carabiner M 1895 - Winchester [ Edit | Edit Source Code ]
The last Winchester Lever Action Carabiner created by the designer John Browning is the 1895 model . It was characterized by the new case magazine and the use of smokeless Nitropulver . Thus high-speed cars could also be shot. The weapon used by the Oschatzer Uhlans had the caliber 30-06. She had a lower lever (lever action) was much lighter than the carabiner K 98 could be led in a saddle shoe and was one-handed to repeat.

In addition to the German Reich (about 8,000 units), the largest single customer was the government of tzarist Russia, with more than 295,000 copies, which were, however, furnished in the Russian caliber of 7.62 mm. These weapons were constructed in accordance with the contract in 1915-16 and served their purpose in the First World War. This is also the reason why the cavalry of the German Reich, after acquaintance with the supply contract to Russia, was not equipped with this weapon. The weapons from the supply for the Russian Tsar empire were built in Belgium at the FN (Fabrique National) Liège under license . The run length for the Russia order was 36 inches (91 cm). The barrel length for the German Kaiserreich at 22 inches (56 cm)."

Never heard of German use, but anything is possible, but Russian contract by FN that is very suspect?

Could those have been captured rifles the Prussians converted to fire 30-06? (although why they'd use an American cartridge is a question)

They'd have to ream the chamber to accept the '06 as the case length is significantly longer (9mm IIRC) than the 7.62 Russian.

We know that the Russians purchased a lot of M1895 Winchester muskets in 7.62 x 54 chambering so its quite probable that the Germans captured and used some quantities of them. One has to assume that these captured rifles, like captured Russian Mosin- Nagants, may have been used by rear area troops and POW guards, etc, instead of by first line combat units. the claim that they were in .30-06 caliber defies logic though.

I am going to say BS to that one. They wouldn't have adopted a non-standard arm just to have a single loading lever gun, on top of the fact they definitely would not have chosen .30-06 as it wasn't even available in Germany at that point. On top of that the logic employed is also suspect as if a Kar98 in Patrone 'S' couldn't shoot it (a 150grn bullet at 2850ft/sec) why would a .30-06 have any better odds? Don't trust the wikis.
