30-06s.... Love/Hate/Re-evaluate

I have long wanted a 7600 .35 Whelen but I keep coming back to questioning if there really is all that much to be gained over a .30-06 launching a 200-220 grain projectile. There is one distinct upside to a .30-06, and that is if you loose or misplace your ammunition it can be found literally anywhere ammo is sold.

There is something to gain and something to loose with a 35 whelen, and those would be frontal area and ballistic coefficent/sectional density respectively.

I know I'd love a rifle that shoots 225gr of .358 caliber lead at 2600 fps...

using also 200gr partition in 30-06 i even shared a load (average mild but accurate) ... Clarke we are a few but wont disclose it ... this is a secret society ...

Heck, even I have some 220 gr ammo. I'll probably use it in my Dad's old Fudd gun to kill a bear with. Will it kill any better than a 7-08 or .308 using 10-150 gr bullets? I doubt it. :)

It does , I've still got 2 boxes of 303 , 215 gr KKSP's that my dad bought many years ago . I found them after he passed away , the old man dropped a few Moose with them over the years . They're not for sale or use , they're just for looking at .

Those 220 grain CILs were what most of the old bush guys had in exploration camps if they had a 30-06. More carried a LE with 215 grain .303.

Accuracy is more important than highest muzzle speed when developing loads. For example, I got superb tack-driving accuracy with Hornady 130gr SP bullets in my .300 WM at a lowly 3100 fps muzzle speed. Less than what a .30-06 can do.

Decided to stick with that load on a Bighorn Sheep hunt in spite of the low muzzle speed. More than sufficient power for taking my trophy Bighorn ram. 1 shot DRT at about 200 meters. :d

Until you realize that you can have both.

Not in this case nor was it necessary to push it to max. Speed is fine, accuracy is final (on Deer-sized game anyway :p). Goes to show the .300 WM gets it done loaded to sub-.30-06 levels. The high muzzle speed flat-trajectory argument is less relevant with the advent of ballistic reticles.

Another blast from the past, CIL Imperial .300 WM factory loads with the Sabre Tip bullet. Ballistic tip bullets actually aren't a new idea. These factory rounds were picked up a few years back from an estate sale and fired just fine in spite of having been stored for about 45 years.

Used the cil king kore soft points to kill my first moose with that bullet
Shot threw a old half burned tree trunk and broke its shoulder and down it went
I still have the slug I recovered, could buy a tag for $10 either ###
