30-30 160FTX LeverEvolution experiences on game?

I would say the 30-30 has killed more game because that is what people had ..30-30 was considered a powerful gun compared to the 44-40 .. but today there is better guns .. A 30-30 would NEVER be seen on a moose hunt with me .. and if some one showed up with one .. I would be very deeply disappointed in that person .. A game animal deserves more respect than that as far as an ethical kill .

and along with hunting them ..helped look for a few also ... and helped skin a pile too so I know how much damage was done with different calibers and different shot placements
Hard to take a 100 yard deer rifle and turn it into a 250 yard moose rifle

**snip**
I just think to shoot a moose with a 30-30 .. when there is such better choices ,, is a bit of a let down of the hunters part ..
years ago some of the old guys had one gun and that was it .. Today most people have a lot more options

I understand and respect your concern. I have seen moose taken with a 30-30 within 50 yards and they dropped like sacks of potatoes. Very humane kill, not at all underpowered.

The FTX rounds are basically a hollow point with a rubber plug, and in my experience open up too much at shorter ranges. They're not a bad bullet, but better for longer 30-30 ranges, 150+yards. The Mono flex and Fusions (and pretty much any standard 30-30 ammo) tend to hold together better closer up and in the case of the fusions penetrate quite deep or right through.

I could be wrong , I n the reality of hunting things happen. I know guys say that my longest shot is under 100 yards [Where I Hunt]!!! then all the factory ammo will work ,as long as you place the bullet . You don't see many POSTS of guys whom have lost game animals because they fired at a moose bear or deer at 200 -300 yards. I have killed moose with a 30-30 six bulls to be exact ,it did the job. I used that Winchester 30-30 because it was all I had .I always used even then a heavy for caliber 170 grain Remington Core-Lokts or Silvertips

I can'' knock on wood',' I have never lost a game animal NEVER.I have taken 35 bull moose and many deer. I always expect the unexpected .In the hands of a skilled rifleman a 30-30 will do as long as you know the rifle load capabilities,, but more importantly your ability to say No Not today, He is Too far I cant get closer. Respect your animals hunt with integrity

I sorry for the rant but If my rifle shot the 140 grain Mono-Flex accurately it would be my go to round. These bullets will extend your rifle a little with its profile ,Nosler also has a 170 Partition that is very good The fusions hold together and are excellent bullets. Enjoy !

I could never wrap my head around why some people are so dead set against the .30/30 for moose. If you actually take the time to get within the effective range of the round, you'll be fine.Look at bows and crossbows for example. You actually have to "hunt"with these weapons and get yourself with in bow range. It's no different.Within it's effective range, the .30/30 will kill effectively and consistently.Having said that,if you have a more versatile caliber at your disposal, you would be better served to go that route depending on the terrain and cover.

So a 140 monoflex or Fusion would be better served up close, and the 160ftx would be for longer ranges?

I guess its time to test both out in my rifle to see what results I get.. Best shot/$ gets my business.

I reload and therefore get the best of both worlds with my 30/30.

I quite enjoy that little rifle and the round. Sure compared to the 30-06, 7mm or 300wm, it is anemic - but out to 150 yards it is pretty effective. I prefer the 125 and 150 grain bullets myself loaded with LeverEvolution powder. I also prefer the open sights on it, so 150 yards is about the limit for my accurate sighting with the factory sights. I'm ok with that.

If I am in open range and longer shots are going to be necessary, then I go to my scoped 30-06.

I also love shooting the cast bullets in my little Marlin (2012 model). Pure fun!

The FTX doesn't hold together well. I wasn't pleased with how it pretty much disintegrated in the 45-70 LeverEvolution stuff.

I exclusively use the 170g fusions now, I've tried a dozen or so different factory rounds and found the fusions to be the most accurate and effective for me. Marlin 336ss, peep sights, brush hunting under 150y.

The FTX are Very accurate, so for longer range id say yeah, impacts under 2000 fps for the 165gr seem to be less destructive (in my experience)

Got some monoflex.. i'll give em a try and see how they go. I'll order some fusion 170's in the next little while and compare them. I'll post results here. I might even get some 160ftx and do a water jug comparison.. I already have some corelokts to compare to as well.
