.30-30 "Accelerators"

Are you refering to the new LEVERevolution ammo by Hornady. It has an elastomer Flex TipTM Technology that is SAFE in your tubular magazine.

It's a soft tip pointed bullet that made my old Marlin 30-30 shoot 1/2 groups at 150 yards. Impressed the hell out me!

nope this is a small caliber (looks like .223 or .243, box doesn't say) 55 gr pointed soft point in a plastic .30 caliber sabot. you can get them in .30-30, .038 and .30-06. they are factory loaded by Remington.

Ok found some info on them.

"Once upon a time, Remington produced ‘Accelerator’ ammunition. This product line loaded .223-caliber bullets into various .30-caliber chamberings (.30-30 Winchester, .308 Winchester, .30-’06 Springfield) by using a plastic ‘sabot’ to increase the diameter of the slug, the sabot separating from the bullet shortly after leaving the muzzle (today blackpowder shooters use a similar setup to fire .44-caliber pistol bullets through .54- or .58-caliber rifles). Sabots allow you to shoot (for example) a .223 bullet at velocities of 4000 fps from your .30-’06 Springfield. No alterations to the arm are needed, neither permanent nor temporary, and accuracy is generally the same as it would have been with the original .30-caliber cartridge--i.e., if your .30-’06 shot two-inch groups at 100 yards with 150-grain .30-caliber bullets, you could expect the saboted .223 bullets to shoot with a similar degree of accuracy, albeit to a different point of impact. While Remington no longer loads such ammunition, reloaders can order sabots through a variety of reloading supply outlets."

So I would not use this ammo in a tubular mag if the bullet protrudes past the sabot. I've never actually seen one of these rounds, so I can't say for sure if it is safe or not. To be on the safe side I would say no .but other memebers might have more info on this round.

he says they o longer load it, but there's boxes of .30-30 and .30-06 sitting on the shelf at work, and they still list it in the catalogue. i must look into this further.

cool. but essentially a single shot. was thinking about usaing this for sor fur hunting, but might just go ahead and order a .22 hornet instead.

I tried them a couple of years ago for the 308 and they were not that impressive. Group sizes were almost twice what the rifle normally shot.

X 2.... I tried them in my 30-06 in the early 80s and the accuracy was terrible.

My H&R Handi Rifle in 30-30 didn't like them either. I believe I still have a half box left over.

We still have them on the shelf at the shop...not very accurate but you can load 2 in the thuddy thuddy....1 in chamber and one in the mag.

They're very expensive, too. For fur, it's hard to beat a 22 short (assuming you're a trapper)

Holy cow, you guys never cease to amaze me! Here I am, reading for fun and I can't help it, I keep learning new stuff! CGN is really incredible :D

Recently heard about a guy who used these on PEI to take yotes every year with.

That would allow them to take advantage of a loop whole,
as they are only allowed .223 on the island i beleive.
As long as they are reasonably accurate, one could use thier trusty
.30-30 or garand :) without getting cattle proded (tasered for you Westerners) by a CO.

Accelerator's were notoriously inaccurate. A Remington marketing experiment that didn't work.
"...issues with the pointed bullet..." Yep. Same as any other spitzer in a tube mag.

Yep, that's what possessed me to resurrect this thread. But apparently I'll be better off getting a dedicated yote rifle then trying to make my 30-30 into one.
Still, it'd be interesting to try some of this ammo out.

"...trying to make my 30-30 into one..." That was Remington's idea. Sell ammo to a hunter to let him use his deer rifle for varmints. The ammo just isn't accurate enough.
If a .30 is legal to use for varmints, in P.E.I., use your deer load. Varmint hunting is great practice for deer season and the varmints won't care.

We're limited to .22 cal centerfire or rimfires, for yote hunting.
Yea, not overly impressed with this regulation, I could always use more practice before deer season.
