.30-30 Ackley Improved

Both of my 30-30 AI would get 2700 fps with 150 and Nobel #44 powder before they started to "stick". :D

One was a Model 94, the other a Marlin. The amazing thing was that the Marlin stuck before the 94 did.

Savage 340C magazines for Ackley rounds

The difference between the factory Savage magazine and the jobbers sold by Western Gun Parts is the position of the front set of lugs. The lugs inside the Western Gun Parts mags are positioned a little more forward than the factory Savage mag. I am guessing the jobber magazines are not made to the same factory standards as genuine Savage parts.

The after market mags with the changed lugs might allow the conversion more easily in the Savage.
It is on my to do list for sure, if for no other reason than to see how it works. It should add some versatility to the old carbines and besides there might be some good experience and knowledge gained for the little experiment. If nobody tried any of these little "improvements" we'd never have half the rounds we have. Maybe there isn't even anything wrong with that idea but if it gives me some lathe time and then some range time, I'm all for it.

I once had an old 94 action with a model 64 front end fitted that I had Ackley Improved by a NB gunsmith. The 24 inch barrel gave good velocity and was accurate with a Lyman receiver sight fitted. Case life was excellent although I had to be pretty careful when seating the bullet or the shoulder would buckle. I only shot 170 grain bullets as they are my preferred weight in a .30 WCF. I did not try for absolute maximum loads and settled @2400 fps. Accuracy and case life were good there. My memory suggests that I used 3031 and 4895 poweders. I found feeding in my particul rifle to be less smooth than the standard round which concerned me. After having my fun with it for several years I traded it here on the board.

I don't think that I would build another one as I'm quite happy with the .32 Special or .30 WCF in a model 94 for general woods walking/hunting situations. If I want a little more power I use a .300 Savage, .33 or .348 WCF. While I love my Winchester lever guns, a Savage 99F in .300 Savage carries just as easy and is a real pleasure to load for and shoot. Come to think of it, I always meant to pick up a takedown 99 in .300!

For experimentation and fun the .30-30 AI is a nice little rifle, just please don't rechamber a really collectible rifle.

Dave Henry rechambered a Marlin I bought from Ted a couple years back. It was a great candidate for the AI treatment as it had a 24" barrel on it and responded very well to the change. I don't remember the exact increase in velocity but it was in the order of 12%. As a matter of fact I have rechambered every 30-30 that I have had to the AI and enjoyed them all.

Since then I have taken a page from PO Ackley's book and dreamed up a modification to the 204 Ruger. I call it the 204 Boss. I will have a page on my website dedicated to this caliber. The reamers have been made and I have the first rechamber job complete. I'm in the midst of cutting the reloading dies. When I'm complete I will post a report on the increase in velocity between factory and the rechambered 204 Boss.

I bought the above Marlin 336A from Boss Hogg. Lovely rifle but I never chrono'd it and sold it in an amazing feat of stoopidness. Accurate as all get out, but it fed factory fodder noticeably smoother than Ackley rounds.
