30-30, as compared to a...

Shot four deer with that class of cartridge:.30/30 2 one shot kills, one dropped on the spot, one ran 40 yards, both hit in lungs. .32 special one one shot kill, neck shot, second was two chest hits on running deer. Second shot was not needed but didn't know that. Deer ran 20 yards.

im on gabriola and we can only use shotguns here, but im planning a trip to the interior, and i'd like to hunt vancouver island also... what islands can you use a rifle on?
H4831, i've heard that somewhere before about the FP bullets in the 30-30... dumps the energy quick and due to the relatively lower velocity it retains it's weight well. and something about total pass through bullets taking precious energy with them into the woods behind the animal...

I wouldn't put much stock in that theory.:p

Shoot a deer in the lungs with a 30-30 and it's going to die quite fist regardless of whether the bullet stays inside or passes through....;)

I just picked up a 30-30 in a Savage 99 but the other lever I had I was planning to use some pointy bullets in anyways. Since most shots are singles anyways I figured to put a hot loaded pointy round in the chamber and soft round points up the tube. Long as you dont mix them up no problem.

Mikey...

I, too, had a beautiful Marlin 336 30.30 sitting in my gun safe for about 10 years, always a tad reluctant to hunt with it, when I had clearly better options like my 25.06 that would reach out beyond the 30.30's 150 yd range.

Then LeverEvolution came along. Got a tad bit excited, bought a couple boxes and headed to the range.

First thing I noticed is that groups tightened up to right around 1", give or take.

I sighted it in 3" high at 100 yds, and then shot a group at 200.

It was dead on zero!

First day I headed out for whitetail, dropped a buck at about 75 yds, pretty much DRT.

I now pack it often for whitetail after elk and mulie seasons are over. Hornady's new ammo made it into a legitimate 250 yd rifle, and pumped new life into a great rifle and caliber. But if elk were in season, I had my Marlin and a tag to fill, and a bull stepped out at 200 yds, it would be in a heap of trouble!

My puppy, with a Bushnell Elite 3200 3x10x40 Compact, Leupold single piece base, and Burris Signature rings...

that is what i wanted to hear sir springer. i think i'll give it a shot this fall

If you're hunting blacktails in coastal rain forest, where long range shots beyond 100 yds are relatively rare, save for the odd logging slash, your Marlin 30.30 is a perfect fit. And this new ammo will still give you the opportunity on those slashes.

I had excellent results on coastal blacktail deer using my Mini14 and Speer 70 grain bullets.
Anything the .30-30 throws will kill those little deer just fine, if you do your job with regards to bullet placement.

My father is a poor man. He only has three firearms. A 20ga Cooey single shot, a Cooey .22LR bolt repeater, and a Mod 94 .30-30. He has had that rifle for close to 50 years. Has shot one deer per year with it without having to chase it more than 20yds. I get it when he is finished.

This is the best post post I have read in a long long time... I can't stop laughing..

As for the 30/30...

I loves it! Yes sir.

Shot everything you mind to mention from Rabbits and coyotes and mooses and deers and does and caribous and everything else.

One of this years deer was a pig... I shot en in da ed and 187 yrds...

I will routinely shoot deer up to say 200yrds and less if possible. but I got no quams bout getting her out to 250.

I says use dat gun and smack a big ole buck wit er, now dat's what I says.

I'm a firm convert to 30-30. Shoot all the old milsurp calibers, but would take 30-30 for a bush and short range (less than 150m) any day.

Easy to shoot, low recoil, good hard hitting round, nice light easy to shoot gun. Sounds good to me.

Only ever shot one deer with my Marlin 30-30. Deer went 30 yards after I hit it straight in the brisket from about 10 yards in thick bush. I was shooting 170gr Speer SPs.

There was no blood trail for 20 yards, which had me a bit worried, but last last 10 yards to find this thing was a frickin' blood bath...

IMHO its a great deer/moose round provided you keep it within the ranges it can reach to. It is not a 400 yard deer gun, but it is hard to beat that light weight, short barreled, quick pointing rifle in the thick stuff. I have a Williams peep sight on mine.

well you see thats whats making me think of using it. i've been handloading for some time now and get ALOT of practice with this particular gun, and with the right load, and no more than a peepsight and skinner front blade, it will give me sub 2" groups at 100-120m while standing using a tree (roof post at the range) for support. very accurate gun and frankly it's the one i shoot the most and can shoot the best. i know with the utmost confidence that with this gun i can place a shot exactly where i want it, everytime.

Sounds like I'm preaching to the converted! :)

Don't matter what you use it's shot placement. Used a 30/30 for 10 years and harvested 6 bucks and all dropped within 10 yards. This year I took my 270WSM and 300WSM as back up. Took a 6-point with the 270WSM that was a bank flop. Decided that my 300WSM was lonely and wanted to go for a trip in the bush. Had a nice 8-point come in and I could tell the buck was a very nervous and looked like it was ready to take off. Unfortunately there was a tree in the boiler room so I took a shot that was a little far back and the buck ran 75 yards. Not going back to the 30/30 but with good shot placement and 100-150 yards it works great.

Scum Frog, was that YOU shot my pig? LOL ;-)

I would say it's been bringing home the venison for the last 116 years, making poor farmers the equals of the Kings of old.

If it's what you use and you're good with it, it will be the right rifle to use. You have set the limits right where the rifle/cartridge can work and you can shoot. You have no worries, although I do think the deer have!

Good hunting!
