Read a lot about using 30/30 leverlution and other ammo on moose but I have a hard time accepting that it's enough or at least practical. the last thing I want is to injure a moose. Have any of you used it and make a clean kill?

Can't speak for myself but I have two of my Grandfather's 30-30's I've inherited and between the two rifles they have accounted for 60+ moose. He says he never shot one beyond 100 yards, he felt that was the gun's limit. He also said they never travelled any farther after the shot than they ever did with his 348 either. He always told me, punch the lungs and/or heart and they are down. He swore by Winchester 170 grain silvertips and there was always 1 or 2 boxes of them in the kitchen counter drawer at the cottage. I see your location as Montreal. I thought I read in the Quebec regs a few years back that they didnt allow a 30-30 for moose there?

Not my choice, but one of the best moose hunters in our camp uses a Model 94 30-30. He doesn't shoot at moose across beaver ponds or clear cuts. He waits for the moose to come closer or he gets himself closer to the moose. Once he told me that the biggest mistake new moose hunters make is to shoot at a moose as soon as they see it. What he meant was that moose, unlike deer, do not tend to randomly change direction. A moose, if moving in your direction, will stick to that direction. Wait it out.

plenty of knock down power if the range is close enough. I'd rather shoot one with a 30-30 than alot of the smaller caliber center fires that some people use. It's just a matter of putting the bullet where it needs to go!

I can't comment on the Lever revolution bullets but, I know the 30/30 is effective on moose within say 100yds or so. An awful lot of moose have been killed over the years by a cool hunter and a 30/30.

The lever revolution 30-30 bullets are meant to give higher velocity and quicker expansion. A good choice for deer, but not what I'd choose for moose. I think the 170 grain conventional bullet is better suited for moose, deeper penetration and less likelihood of stopping if it hits a heavy bone. Like others have already commented, the 30-30 is an adequate close range moose round.

I use 170gr Hornady + 32gr Win 748/Win brass/Mag primer............many deer and moose................Harold

Winchester 170gr Silvertips is what we use. I've personnally shot 2 and seen another 4 or 5 dropped with a 30/30, none lost so far.

I have since moved on to a 308, 300wsm or 338, depending on my mood that day.

I know a very dignified lady now in her 80s who nailed a moose with her new Marlin Glenfield 30-30 first time out with it some years ago.

For my father, the 30-30 was a moose gun. Cover was tight, ranges were short, scopes were a novelty, and he wouldn't have fantasized about shooting a quarter of the distance that I think is routine.
Under the same conditions he hunted it would still be a moose gun, but that time and place are gone. Fact is, his moose gitter is a step down from my muzzleloaders in power, range, accuracy and sighting equipment. I still have a couple around to play with, since I grew up with that sort of thing and still like them. I can't think of one reason why I'd want to hunt with one. There's bolt actions that weigh less and practically everything hits harder.

Will do the job just fine when used with the right bullets and within its limitations (i.e. effective range).

I know you guys must be tired of this pic by now, but folks keep asking if the 30-30 will do it.

The only thing I can advise is that you don't take stupid shots.
The top photo was a spine shot from above, and was a one shot instant kill at about 80 yards.
The second photo was a lung shot, from about 25 feet, and also dropped on the spot.

Just avoid bad angles, gut and shoulder shots. That's good advice for anyone hunting moose with most cartridges though. Go for heart lung broadside.

The old folks on the river up here used to call the 303 Enfield and the 30/30
their "heavy"' rifles, as opposed to a 22 or shotgun!:D
You here stories all the time about lots of moose kiled with the 30/30, and someone will say " ya, and more wounded" I shot lots a moose myself with my single shot 30/30, and know a lot of people who used the m94 as their main big game gun, with no problem.

I used to be the sporting goods guy at out local Woolco, back arount 1990.

At the time, 30-30 still outsold all other centerfires combined at my store and the vast majority of people who came in to buy 30-30 ammo were going moose hunting with their rifles.

Some of my customers with third generation 30-30 moose hunters, so I think they must have been having some success with it...

Shot placement, shot placement , shot placement.

243, 257, 7 x 57, 260, 30-30 , 303 , etc...................

The moose won't know any different if you hit it in the boiler room with any of those. Patience and shot placement probably the two biggest factors when big game hunting.
