30/30 for moose?

Although not recommended, more moose probably been taken (historically) with a 30-30 than any other caliber..... well, besides the good ol' .303.

I had an American friend ask why we hang our moose. My answer was because we can.
At the time we had an old army truck with a huge mechanical winch. It would pull a moose up a tree like it was a paperweight.
Now we use ATV's for the same job, but we had to put a pipe between two trees and a pulley to make it easier. Still takes a bunch of guys piled on the machine for weight, or sometimes two machines.

I use the 30-30 as my walking rifle, unless I'm going into open country. I try to keep ranges as short as possible for moose.

we hang our moose too, never quarter it till we're butchering it.

It is easier to keep clean and move around that way.

but we don't hang them so high :D

this one is ready for skinning and butchering

30-30 is the predominant rifle in my camp. But then again my camp is full of old farts who are too cheap/lazy to buy/try anthing else. The 30-30 has accounted for lots of our moose, it just seems like the guys shooting them do a lot more shooting than the rest of us with larger calibers. Oh well, if I fired my gun once a decade I'd probably empty it too!

We like to hang our moose as well. Keeps em clean, lets the cavity drain and the animal cools evenly. Also, they are much more impressive hanging on the meatpole when other camps come to visit.

I am not sure if that answer satisfied your American friend, but since I'm still curious, can you elaborate? Why not just quarter it?
a couple of the others have mentioned the easy handling and cleanliness of hanging. We also hang because of bears and wolves.
We don't pack up and go home when we shoot our moose, we are there for a holiday as well as a hunt, so we only take the moose out if it's too warm. And it has been that last few years, so they have only hung for the night.

We will skin and quarter a moose to take him out, or, in the field, if it's not possible to take it to camp whole. That doesn't happen often. Our guys are pretty good at getting an atv or two, and if need be a trailer into some very bad places.

Why is it "not recommended" and by whom? That's crazy talk. What should be recommended is bullet placement, hunting skill, and patience. Most people today can't wait for the shot, or position themselves for it, so they have to have a .380 whipper-snapper-magnum to make up for what they can't do properly with a regular firearm.
"Drive through bone and body to get to the vitals from any angle" is one statement I hear lots and read plenty on here and as far as I am concerned it is drivel. Simply know your game, put yourself in position, wait patiently, and shoot the animal where it counts. It is not hard, and I also don't have all the fancy camo clothes that are scent blocked and silent in the woods and yet I seem to get my share of tags filled every year. And no whiz-bang magnum needed to do it. Sometimes just my SKS with 150gn bullets.

Rookie Wildcat,

where do you get 150gr soft points in 7.62x39mm? Most soft points I find are 123 grain, and I'd have alot more confidence in the round for deer size hunting if I found 150 grainers.

I am getting into reloading... but who makes the .310 bullets in 150gr soft point? As I said I've only seen 123-125gr.

Thanks for the info guys and thanks for the nice pics! I love my Winchester 1894 as a walking gun and since it sports iron sights I won't use it past 100m or so...

I just assumed that you needed a .310 cal bullet to reload the 7.62x39mm, such as the one Hornady offers for 123grains. Is it safe to use the .312 bullets intended for a 303 to reload hunting ammunition for the sks?

*EDIT*

Well what do you know, hodgdon has reloading data that specifies a .312 bullet in 150 grain... I didn't know they were interchangeable! Thanks CGN! :)
