30-30 hornady leverevolution

.the price per box is actually damn near in line with all of the other available over the counter hunting ammo using premium bullets........

True, but the gain one gets from these at the practical ranges with open sights is nil... My C.I.L bullets do the exact same at a fraction of the cost... The Saber Tip was the "premium bullet" back in the day, and still does the job every bit as good as ANY "premium bullet" on the market today..

I actually shoot quite a bit... I fire a pile of rounds at a running deer target every yr... Not one just to take my rifle out just before the hunt, fire a few rounds to see if it's still on, then go hunt... Love to shoot, and when you run deer with hounds the more one shoots the better..

Sorry partner...gotta call you on this one.

I used a lot of Dominion ammo in the day, as a matter of fact, almost exclusively from 1958 to 1963, and while the good old "Kling-Kor" soft point was a darn good bullet, and the Copper point expanding worked quite well, the Sabertip acted much like the first generation Ballistic Tips....they disintegrated, particularly if you stuffed them into a magnum case and hit any bone.
The lead core of the Sabertip was not locked into the jacket in any way, and separations were very common, something today's "premiums" do not do.

Regards, Dave.

Not trying to start an argument here, just relating personal experience with these offerings.

I agree for the most part, but I have not seen this at 30-30 velocity with 170gr Sabers.. Recovered very few. The ones I did recover mushroomed quite nicely.. I was talking 30-30 only, and from my experience they did every bit the job than the Barnes Starefire, and Nosler P's that I also loaded and taken deer with...

I believe you, and agree, as applied to the 30-30, and similar chamberings. Premiums lend little to their performance.
And since this thread was a 30-30 thread, I stepped out of context with my experience. Apologies extended to the OP and yourself. :)
Dave.

The old Core-Lokt bullets have been around for a zillion years (think they first appeared in the Remington ammo catalogs in 1940) and are the best bullet going for 30-30 Win, 32 sp, 35 Rem velocities.
Have a couple of old green boxes of Rem Core-Lokt ammo still around that dad (RIP) bought many years ago.
Stocked up on Remington Core-Lokt 170 grain 30-30 ammo a couple of years ago when they were $15 a box at Lebarons.
Can't beat that for price.
