30-30 or 44mag???

That takedown is pretty nice for sure, the only changes I could see would be a regular rubber recoil pad and a slightly bigger loop.

Has it got a rebounding hammer? Looks like a tang safety.... Post some more pictures if you can maybe broken down as well.
 
The other nice thing about that Winchester trapper in .44 mag is the 1 in 26" R.O.T.
I could never understand why Marlin uses such a slow twist ,1 in 38"
 
I noticed no one has mentioned the difference in dimension and weight between the two models of Marlin rifles chambered in the two cartridges we're discussing.
The 336 with a 20 inch barrel is full inch longer and in most cases nearly a pound heavier than an 1894. If you start talking 16 inch "trapper length" barrels (where in my opinion the .44mag is most efficient) you are seeing a significant difference in weight and length. Add to the mix the quicker lever throw and slim, svelte lines of the 1894 and it becomes clear why I always reach for my 1894P over my 1895 and 336's as a general purpose woods rifle, IMHO it is the quicker handling model.
I'm with H4831 on the 150 yard shot. I have enough trigger time with my 1894 to honestly say I'd be confident in my ability and my load if I had to take that shot. The killing power of my hand-load at 150 on a mule deer buck would not even be a factor. If given a choice I'd rather take that shot with my 336 though! ;)

To be fair to my 336 and give credit where it is due, it is the more accurate rifle at 100 yards.
I am very anxious to try some Hornady Leverevolution bullets in both the 1894 and 336, I'm hearing alot of good things about them. Anyone used them and want to comment?

I don't have a wealth of knowledge or experience regarding Winchester 94's or 1892's, but I am assuming the same above differences apply between the two models.

As much as I hate to say it, every single caliber that I have tried the leverevolution in has shot like cra.....p.
Wish is was much more accurate.
I tried .357,44mag,30-30,35Rem, and 45-70.

This is based on at least 5 or 6 trials or more of each caliber above.

The concept in the ammo is sound but the performance just doesnt seem to back it up.

Leverlotion or whatever is just more marketing crap to sell bullets, totally unnecessary, with "heavy for caliber" wide meplat bullets, these calibers shine on large game at most normal ranges. The controlled expansion that most of these exhibit is a bonus, along with complete pass throughs.
 
I load the 325gr Hornady FTX (bullets used in the leverlution ammo) in my T/C Contender carbine in 45-70 to 1850fps they are exceptionally accurate and are now my do everything hunting bullet in this rifle combo.

I have absolutely no issues shooting at game out to 250 yards with this load only reason I wouldn't shoot further is I haven't shot them any further yet = I do not know the actual drop past 250 yards so I will not shoot further until I do.

I also load 425gr or 430gr WLNGC's super wide meplate hard cast for my bear stopper rounds.

My 35rem is still shooting the 200gr.RN
And it shoots beyond what I require out of that rifle.

My 350 hornady flat noses do some serious damage. More than I really need.

The hardcast heavies are awesome for killing power...they go balls deep, no argument here.
What interests me about the FTX's { thanks to Camp Cook for the proper nomenclature ;) } is the significantly higher B.C.
We should see some marked improvements in trajectory over the traditional bullets.

Yes if i was shooting at a steel plate I wouldn`t hesitate to take a 150-200yd shot with a .44 mag, but on a animal id feel alot more confident with my .243 or .308.

Yes you right 44mag is hardly a 200m cartridge. That's why 30-30 is much better at that distance hands down, but has much less stoping power up close and personal....Enter 35Rem, my Marlin 336 loaded with 220gr Speer FP with "casefull" of AA2520 can shoot them safely 2150fps in 20" barrel and with very good hunting accuracy of less than 4" at 200m all day long if I do my part. This is devastating load at close and far distance on any game from lever action rifle and is as close as it can get to have a cake and eating it too. GR8

The 35Remington is a nice cartridge in a lever!
I have owned a few, and still do.
Very decisive on bears.
I was very fortunate to take a 20" black bear at 175yards two years ago.
Got a pass through, and a 20-30 yard recovery.
This was with the 200gr. Sierra RN.
I might try those 220's some day.
I'm shooting the Marlin XLR at the moment.
Love the feel of it, but wish the barrel was 4-5" shorter.
