my friend at work asked me .........

HAS THERE EVER BEEN A SEMI AUTO RIFLE MADE /CHAMBERED IN 30-30.??

either factory produced by the big firms or any you members know done up by gunsmiths or experimentors ........

thanks

During the '50's war in Cuba, a U.S. mercenary/armorer managed to convert some Winchester Model 94's in 30-30 to FULL auto! Photos exist but nobody has had one in their hands to examine. I've often thought of this one and like everyone else, can't figure out how it was done.

30-30 Win is a rimmed cartridge which makes it harder to make a semi.

Still the Russians made the SVT-40 and it takes a rimmed cartridge.

Browning's (the guy, not the company) original idea for a machine gun was built on a '92 Winchester, but it was a 44/40, not a 30-30. It used a flap in front of the muzzle that was hit by gas, that then pivoted and through a linkage would cycle the bolt. I've seen a photo of it in a book somewhere.

Century Arms converted many Tokarevs to 303 Br in the 1950s and 60s. They also built some in 30-30. At least, I think it was Century that did the 30-30s.

A neighbour of mine had one, when we lived in Kirkland Lake. He used it every fall for moose hunting. The 303 is much more common, however I do remember seeing the odd one in 30-30 on used gun racks.

Some of you older guys must have seen these, as well.

Globco(Ottawa)-converted many Tokarev SVT rifles from 7.62x54R to .303 in the '70 's by re-chambering them (often quite crudely)-headspace issues abound-the 7.5 Schmidt-Ruben Swiss straight pull rifles were done during the same time frame-often with the same problems-however -the .30-30 round, being less powerful than the original chambering, seem to have had less problems-ie. failure to extract-ripping rims etc..

m6tlogistics,

You are right, it was Globe that did those conversions. And, now that I think about it, my neighbour's rifle was, indeed, a Schmidt-Rubin straight pull, not a Tokarev. That is a long time back!

Thanks for the correction.

update
i mean any factory big name companies made semi auto 30-30 rifle, ...........not conversions .

None that I know of. More modern calibers were available by 1920, so
semis were designed for those calibres (i.e. 300 Sav.) than 30-30.
Remington 8 + 81 come to mind

I read in Chuck Hawks, that 30-30's popularity and longevity is more to
due with the lever action carbines (model 94) that come in that calibre than its performance.

Savage made a pump in 30-30 (the 170) but no semis.
