Hi All

thanks Landy

You know, I've owned suspect scopes and a friend told me to try the twenty square test - shoot a group (3" or otherwise) and then turn the scope adjustments to go 20 clicks up, 20 left, 20 down and 20 right - shoot another group and see if you're back where you started - just a thought

Did you shoot the gun with iron sights first to see how it groups with that ammo? I had one and it shot decently with iron sights, in fact surprisingly well. My dad had a Savage 340 bolt action 30-30 that we stuck a cheap scope on and it shot a good group at 100 yards. Couple of inches at 100 yards.

Its not the .30-30 cartridge that isn't accurate, its the guns that the bullets are usually saddled with. Most levers just don't shoot much better than 1.5-2" MOA. I had a savage model 219 single shot that was just as accurate as my other caliber rifles.

when shooting, are you resting on the mag tube or the forearm? Levers are fussy about this, if resting on the mag tube you are pushing up on the barrel and all bets are off as to what that rifle can do. Back the rest to at least the forearm wood or under the receiver and watch your groups shrink.just my .02 and worth what you paid for it.

My Marlin 336 will shoot an inch at 50, and better.

I would suspect the scope before the gun. I would never shoot with a scope before trying Irons first though. If I have a choice that is.

I am quickly learning that if you can do it, stick with irons. Far more reliable, less bulky, field of view is never an issue, and quicker target acquisition.

At 30-30 ranges a scope is kinda pointless. A good peep sight is a good option, or even some nice fibre optic sights will work very well.

A while ago I picked up one of those older Bushnell 22 scopes with a 3/4" tube with a rail on the bottom and a one piece mount that clamped on the rail and the dovetail on the rifle.

When I went to bore sight it with a laser bore sighter I noticed that the point of aim shifted fairly consistently for a few clicks then took a considerable jump to the side. I guess that this is the result of excessive backlash in the turret screw? This may also be what is happening on your 30-30.

Well under a inch at a 100yds lets see some pics ?.
Sorry, no pics! Also bigger than 1". I have a Win 94 and started to do reloading. I took my very first reloads, 7 of them, and took the 94 to the range. I hadn't shot for several years, the rifle hadn't been shot for several decades. Seven shots at 100 meters in just under 1 1/2" with iron sights. It would have been interesting to check in groups of three. I think that with working the load it could easily be under 1 moa. In fact why the h wouldn't it be, you are still pounding a chunk of metal down range with a charge of powder the same as any target gun and it is a .308 diameter chunk of metal same as from a target .308 Win used at any competition. It just might not have as pointy a tip.

A couple of weeks ago I bought the same scope (3-9x) for an abused Marlin that I bought for cheap. I'm not typically a fan of putting a scope on a lever but this one had the rear sight destroyed.

I bore sighted it beforehand. It took about 3 shots to get to the center from 50 yards. After that it was very consistent and well within an inch. I haven't shot it past 50 yards yet. I'll leave that for the spring. I was shooting with only a rest for my elbows. I imagine that might help.
