Need a price check on a Savage take-down 99 in 30/30. metal is good - very good especialy considering it was made in 1914, wood has some scratches, easily fixed . cheqering is good.has internal mag with round counter . looks to be drilled and tapped for 1-piece base & tang site. I have read that the 30/30 is a bit of a collector as the whole idea of the savage rotary mag was to allow for pointy bullets, this made the 30/30 redundant & a bit scarce.no idea if thats true or not,but I know there are some real Savage experts on here.

Not exactly true. The .303 Savage, the first commercial chambering for the 1895, used round-nose bullets, as did the .25-35, .30-30, .32-40, .38-55. I am not familiar with the .22 HP, but it may also have been offered as a roundnose originally. And I believe the prototype rifles were built as .32 WCF, aka .32-20, also usually loaded with roundnoses.
That said, Savage 1899 .30-30 rifles are collectible, just not especially so.

For starters do not attempt to fix scratches on a collectable gun. Sounds like a special order Savage if the checkering is factory. I'm no Savage authority but I don't think checkering was common on any Savage at that time. The takedown feature adds to things as well but if it is drilled for a one piece scope base that is bad. I think they all came drilled for a tang sight at that time but if someone drilled and tapped the rifle for a scope they turned a nice collectable Savage into a nice shooter. Got any pics?

One piece base or just the tang sight holes? Big difference. Is there holes drilled in the top of the receiver ring?

I'd like to see pics to, usually when you hear of something like this it's always got something to bring you down, right now the D&T screwed the value but I'd wager a guess that the checkering isn't a Savage factory pattern as well and is aftermarket.

Either way, the D&T threw the collector value out the door so I'm guessing you've got a nice $300-$400 shooter in your safe.

Ya what he says :)

Except I'd reserve price judgment till I see the gun.
$400 sounds a little high for a D&T gun with checkering issues.
Some peoples idea of "very good" can be actually very well worn to others especially when the poster added the comment "especialy considering"

Sounds like a real nice hunting rifle.
For pointy bullets to work well in a Sav rotory you need to use short olgave pointy bullets eg. Speers, Sierras

excellent

Thx all ,I new there were good Savage guys on here.
-pics are a problem right now as I have idea what photoshop has done.
-the metal is good which likely means it was done in last 15-20 years & then a safe queen .
-definatly factory D&T for the tang sights / base holes r after market
-only pointy bullets I have tried are leverevolution = nice tight grouping
I think the rifle has been bubba'd but nicely done ,as has been sujested looks like what I have is a nice hunter.
thx for info guys
