30-30 testing ( pointed/ spitzer bullets.)pic heavy beware.

actually i think i may have 5 or so 30 cal 160 lee boolits left i may load i havent made any for a while i sold all of my 4k that i had lol. ohh well i geuss start the smelting/casting pot up tommorow as well.i still got like 9k more gas checks to use up.

Even though I regularly hunt with HV cartridges, i did buy 3 lbs of Leverevolution and 300 each of the 30 and 32 FTX bullets. Look forward to messing with them to see what they will do. I think my fathers 30-30 killed more game and pests on the cattle ranch than I will ever claim. (still a 270 fan though :)

Am I going to have to be the first guy to ask the obvious? What does a .30/.30 Win. lever action have to do with precision shooting?

Decent thread, just not in the right section.

Hmmm unless that was sarcasm this thread is about Hunting and Sporting Arms?
As long as your experimentation is safe keep up the good work. Some of our better ideas come from fellas like you trying new things.:dancingbanana::dancingbanana::dancingbanana:

this thread originally started in the precision rifle forum. that was my mis-guided thinking.

and yeah i have had no signs of pressure or anything bad yet. thank you for all your kind thoughts. i will have more pitures posted tommorow of my new targets. goint to the range to test out some more bullets.maybe even a video of the tracers and hope they work at the low velocity.

Very interesting post, and shooting the 30/30 with iron sights certainly is precision shooting. My 30/30 results don't mirror these, I had a Browning Trad. Hunter single shot(1885) in 30/30, so pointed bullets were on the agenda. When all was said and done, the Lyman 311041 cast bullet was most accurate, and least expensive to boot. Now I have a new Marlin 336 30/30 to wring out, and so far nothing shoots good in it!! The Micro-groove rifling is what I am blaming it on, but I will shoot this gun all spring. but won't bother with pointed bullets as i see no advantage to them in the .30 wcf. IMHO any advantage the ptd. bullet has is easily trumped by the thump of the flat point bullet and reliable expansion.

Hey Ben, I have no experience with micro groove, but it seems logical that with more lands and grooves, it has more edges, and may take a bit longer to break in.
This might be partially behind the theory that they don't shoot cast bullets well. I call it theory, because some micro groove rifles apparently do shoot cast bullets well.
It took forever to break in a new 44-40 barrel on my '92, and I was thinking that slower bullet speeds may also affect the break in period.
If it starts shooting better after a bit, go back and retry some of the loads that didn't shoot before. You might get a surprise.

I don't think Marlins Micro-groove barrels is the reason for Ben's accuracy problem.
It has always amazed me the accuracy of Marlin Guide guns with that barrel & a .375 BB I once had was the only lever I ever had that would shoot under 1" groups....another gun I shouldn't have let go :(

I didn't say they were inaccurate, only that they may take a bit longer to break in.
Marlin has a reasonable reputation for accuracy in the levergun community, and I think it's deserved, even if quality control seems to have slipped of late.

surprising result.

well i have just got back from the range and took pictures of my targets.i have measured out from ctc using a digital caliper. all tagets were shot at 100 yards i will post the pictures up in the best to worst order. you may be surprised(i sure was).i didnt take any pictures of the tracers as i was just testing to see if they would light.(shamefully they didn't i have a video i'll post of the 30-30 and 30-06 tracers at the bottom of the page.

Hi Ken: If you're seriously interested in shooting the M 94 you really should read Sam Fadala's book "Winchester's .30-30, Model 94". Lots of history, loads etc. Plus a chapter on tuning the M94 for accuracy. The "tuning" really works too. Not that my M 94 is a tack driver but it will put 3 shots from a rest into 1 1/2" to 1 5/8" at 100 yds all the time.

How fast are you shooting your groups?
Most of them look like two shots almost touching,
then the third is off in left field, once the barrel is hot.
Three of those 125 Speers from a cold barrel look like
you could cover them with a dime.

I always figured if your first two shots missed, why would you
want the third one to hit the same place? :p :)
