The 160 FTX does do a good job of extending the range of the .30-30, however there is a trade off to it and that is a lack of holding together at close ranges. I wouldn't choose them for a moose hunt, but certainly suitable for whitetails, black bears, and similar sized critters. I just do not trust the 160 FTX to provide enough penetration on a shot of anything other than precisely broadside under 100 yards on a moose, after my experiences with them on deer up close. Extend the range a touch and they may hold together better, never bothered trying.
Moose with the .30-30 I'd like a tougher 170 grain bullet (partition or Aframe) or at least bonded. Placement trumps all though. Deer and average sized black bears I'd use whatever load my .30-30 shot well, in my case 150 grain fusions beat even my handloads. I may Look to a tougher bullet again if I was chasing a monster black bear.
