I just picked up a wack of brass and die to reload 30 30

I want to use a 140g to 160g plated round nose ".NO interest in lead cast."

I really dont want high priced Hornady.......who sells cheap bulk 30 30 plated bullets ???

aannnd thank you in advance !!

I have a large quantity of 150 gr plated bullets.

I tried to load them with rifle powders but they would not work unless very downloaded. I wanted to sue them for 100 yard practice, but they are too mild.

My next attempt will be to try shotgun powder and pop gun accurate loads for 50 yards.

If you are looking for ammo close to full power, i don't think a plated bullet would work.

Finding plated rifle bullets may be a problem. I use cast bullets for all of my rifles, l cast my own. Nine grs of Unique under 150 to 180 gr bullets. When I want to up the velocity I use 2400 or IMR 4198. Winchester 748 also works well. The problem with regular rifle powders is people use loads that don’t generate enough pressure, causing the powder to not burn properly. I would find someone near you casting 30 caliber. 18 grs of 2400 in 7.62x54R works well on deer.

I agree that it is hard to find a good price on 30-30 bullets. Especially jacketed. I even find it hard to find 30-30 bullets on several websites. Either they don't carry them or "out of stock". Hard to believe for such a popular caliber?

This is purely speculation, but my guess is the 30-30 is a cartridge that tends to get carried lots but shot little, I'm thinking about "the 1 box of ammo will last me 5 years" kind of hunters.

Another factor is likely the lack of multiple uses for the same bullet - while your average spitzer 30cal bullet can be used in 308, 3006, 300wm, 300wsm, etc etc there aren't a lot of other 30cal cartridges that dictate the need for flat or round nose projectiles. Simple Economy of Scale means the manufacturer probably makes far fewer bullets that are suitable for the 30-30 compared to other 30cal bullets, and fewer bullets made means more cost per bullet for them.

Obviously you can use a flat nose bullet in a 308, but there is little reason to do so especially if they are harder to find or more expensive to buy.

well I got my hands on 180 grain.plated
was planning on using- IMR 4064 or 3031 powder. he will sell them for 30 bucks each. full un opened.

3031 is a great powder.... best choice I think.

I personally I think 180 grn bullets are too heavy. I go for 150 grns Round nose.

Keep an eye out at some online auctions. I have had some great deals on 150grn and 170 grn CIL and imperial bullets. Think I'm good for 20 years and the prices worked out to under $20 a box of 100.

You can also get some decent lead bullets for 100 yrd range and gallery loads. Don't rules this method out... There are a few threads on this. You can make some awesome affordable training rounds and still have lots of hit down power for yotes or varmints.

I would have liked 150g ...but all I could get was 180
not ideal, but............

25 years ago I reloaded cast ,,,my results were disappointing,...maybe I will have to revisit it and see where I went wrong.

will go with the 3031 then.

I remember a buddy of mine , 30 years ago was using 6.5 g of bullseye powder for plinking. dont remember what grain of bullet.

these will not be hunting rounds, rather,.... targets, range ,ect

by not looking into casting for the 3030 you are costing yourself a lot of extra money, I cast for my 3030 using the lyman bullet and can shoot all day for pennies. accuracy is very good when you sort the newly cast bullets into match grade weights and load them up. works for me.

really good point....the dust would go every where. NOT good.
perhaps a slow precision cut with a hand filing & sanding to finish it.

Dust? I’ve been cutting lead bullets fer years with a drill and a hacksaw. Any lead filings fall to the floor and get swept up eventually .

As for the30/30 loads, I shoot 170 grn Lee gas checked flat points over 22 grns of 4198. I shoot a savage 419E (single shot break action) with iron sights. The trigger pull is heavy but I consistently get 3.5” groups at a 100 yards. Very happy with that. I get 1.5” groups with the same bullet in a scoped 30-06 with 27 grains of 4198.

Back to the 30/30. A 98 grain cast rn over 15 grains of 4198 is superb fer grouse or rabbit at up to 50 yards. And a 00 buck pellet, sized to .309, over 2 grains of N1000 looks very promising out to 25 yds. (More to come on that.)
