Good day gentleman!
I am considering either a 1:10" twist 30-30 win barrel or a 1:7" 30-30 win Ackley improved. 18" barrels.

Anyone here have experience with such a fast twist in a 30-30?
I understand that some guys want that twist for sub-sonic accuracy. I am not so interested in sub sonic, but I am in the 30-30 Ackley chambering.

I plan on primarily target shooting 1-200 yards, with the occasional deer hunt inside that distance.

There's no advantage to the 1-7" twist unless you're shooting very long bullets. Long bullets in a .30-30 aren't practical unless you have a bolt or single shot. Magazine length and throat length will be issues.

A 1-10" twist will work fine for a 220 gr bullet, but if you're loading for a lever, even a 220 RN will leave the cartridge too long to cycle through the action.

I believe the twist on factory Winchesters is 1-12", and it seems to work just fine up to a 190 gr RN.

Rregardless of type of action I can't see any real benefit to such a fast twist in the 30/30 improved or standard. As has been mentioned the original lever guns has 1 in 12 twist and worked fine with 170 grain loads.

Yes, the standard 1:10" should be fine. My last 30-30 win barrel was a 1:12" twist, and never shot to my expectations. I don't expect benchrest precision, but would like at or sub moa range.

Winchester used 1-12, Marlin used 1-10

1-7 is probably only going to be useful for Subsonic?

Hello guys! The 30-30 Winchester barrel my wife and I got was the standard 30-30 win chamber and 1:10" twist rate.

This barrel is 18" long, and heavy contour.
I was skeptical that this short tube would be able to reach any velocities near the top potential of the 30-30 win. But, I was apparently worried about nothing!

The barrel is unexpectedly accurate as well! What a bonus!
I have managed. 6 or 7 groups in the 0.3's to .6" range! The 168 grain Berger's are chronographed at 2250fps. Right were they should be.
I am hoping that these bullets will consistently expand at 30-30 distances 100-250yds +/- a bit.

This kind of accuracy right off the hop makes this combo really fun to shoot!

I'd buy a single shot in 303! I'm probably gonna get a Big Badger in 30-30, but I'd take 303 over that if it were an option. Sadly the only options for 303 that I know of are pushing $3k...

I would go with the 1:10 twist. I have a single shot in 30-30 and it'll shoot 5 shot sub moa groups at 100m with 168gr Amax bullets. It seems like it likes that twist rate.

Chris.
Not to derail post but I’m curious which single do you have ? I’ve read 30/30 can be VERY accurate in the right platform .
