Edit to add: I just primed some brand new 44 Mag brass, and had a difficult time seating the primers again. Ginex large rifle, again.
Micrometer to the rescue: CCI = 0.2107 inch. Ginex = 0.2114 inch. I will mic a few more.
I have had a Marlin 336 in the safe for a long time, and hardly ever used it, partially because i don't like buckhorn sights. With my eyes getting older I decided to put a scope on it and now the rifle is a joy to shoot.
Two questions on reloading:
1/ During priming, the primer tends to sit slightly proud of the base and not flush with the case material around the primer pocket. Even using a RCBS Rockchucker and a substantial amount of force, the primer is still proud enough that the rifle bolt will not always lock up, with 1/8 inch of clearance from the lever to the tang lower surface.
I have had better luck inserting a 1/4 inch dowel into the mouth of the case and tapping firmly on it with the case head resting on a flat piece of metal; basically using the Lee Loader method of primer insertion.
This is both with CCI and Ginex primers and brass of various headstamps .
Anybody else run into this?
Secondly, I have had 3 or 4 misfires out of around 60 rounds with the Ginex primers...all but one fired on the second firing pin strike. Looks like a light strike. Anyone else have that happen...is a 336 with a 2 piece firing pin prone to light strikes?
