I just picked up a mint unfired Ruger #1 in 30-30 was thinking of loading some 220 RN's just for the hell of it, Anybody ever try this before? just lookin for a idea of where to start with as far as powder and how much of it. I have LVR 4320 4064 4895 H414 4350 4831 4198
Yes there may not be any practical reason to do this, just want to give it a try because I know it will work, and Iam curious to see what velocity the 30-30 case will put out, Iam guessing I can get 1800 fps if so I might just go get me a whitetail Doe for the freezer next month.

It does sound interesting. The cannelure probably won't line up in the right spot which may make it difficult to get it the proper OAL.

Won't matter in a Ruger #1 as the bullets will not need a crimp to prevent setback. It's a single shot. A slightly compressed load of Lever should give top velocity of all the powders mentioned and if the brass is up to the task, the rifle most certainly is!

...no, never

in spite of that (i.e. the facts)

there is a whole lot of difference between a freight car moving at a couple of MPH and a phonograph needle loaded to 9,000 FPS, even though their energy is the same...hmmm...

...good luck with your freight car and tell us of how it works...

(read some elmer keith and tell us of what he says about same...)

The weight of the bullet exceeds the cartridges efficiency. If you calculate your energy you have made an inferior bullet on every part of the scale. There is nothing gained over a 170gr and as mentioned, your bullet may not even expand but rather thru and thru

Buffalo Bore sells 30-30 with 190gr JSP @ 2100fps safe for lever guns so I'm pretty sure you can get close to that in a Ruger #1 with a 220gr bullet. Like I said before, the brass will be the limiting factor. Here's an Alaskan moose taken with the 30-30 Buffalo Bore ammo. I would love their load data for that round!

I have loaded 30-30 with 220 gr Hornady RN.

25.0 gr IMR4895 gave me 1700 fps in a 22" barrel. Quickload says 35K psi

This is close to what I have in mind, but I think it might go a tad quicker with IMR 4064 I was goin' to try 28 grains, but need a little more info before I load em up and yank the trigger.

Standard twist for 30-30 is 1-12" and might be not enough to stabilize those long 220gr bullets especially with low muzzle speeds.
At 1800fps the rpm of those bulets will only be 108 000rpm, not enough IMHO.
Somebody mentioned it that bullet expansion might be non existent as well.
I have a sugestion for you OP, try 180gr Nosler Partition protected (flat?) point or better jet (cheaper!) Speer 180gr Mag Tip (my favorite) and that combo will give you much better option.
