how can you vote that the 30-30 is not adequate for deer hunting, the cartridge has probably slain more deer in North America than anything else. Not to mention bear, elk, moose, etc etc in the bad 'ol days.

Within 150 yards it's a very capable round. Slammed my first buck ever to the ground with a Model 94.

Of course it is, assuming the shooter's skills are up to snuff.

It is not a long-range cannon but I would hazzard a guess that its maximum range is greater than the skills of a lot of shooters.

Well it was actually pretty easy, I clicked the little buttons :p

I would argue that a Hyundai Pony is a car, and will get you around a Formula One Race track, but that doesn't make it truely 'adequate' for the purpose of F1 racing...

N'est pas eh?

Additionally I can argue that there have probably been more deer left to linger from the craptacularity of the 30-30 than any other cartridge. I guess thats where 'your' definition of adequate comes into play. I mean hell you could hunt deer with cinderblocks too, and successfully I would imagine, but would that make them 'adequate' in peoples minds :?:

adequate

adj 1: (sometimes followed by `to') meeting the requirements especially of a task; "she had adequate training"; "her training was adequate"; "she was adequate to the job" [ant: inadequate] 2: enough to meet a purpose; "an adequate income"; "the food was adequate"; "a decent wage"; "enough food"; "food enough" [syn: decent, enough] 3: about average; acceptable; "more than adequate as a secretary" [syn: passable, fair to middling]

Meets the minimum standard

Any proof to back up that theory??

If not then like most "gut-feelings" it is probably just a sign of constipation. ;) LoL

Just for comparison I don't think anyone would argue that the 30-06 was not capable of cleanly killing a deer at 250 yards. The 30-30 has roughly the same amount of energy at 125 yards as the 30-06 does at 250 when the former is loaded with a 175 gr bullet and the later with a 180.

Like I said earlier when used within it's limitations the 30-30 is still a very capable cartridge.

sure, the 30-30 has wounded alot of deer. so has the 303 British, the 308, the 30-06, 300 mags, 7mm's, 270's, 243's, 338's....45/70's, shotgun slugs, arrows, Chevy trucks, etc etc etc...

Ya but can you make crib boards and lamps outta cinder blocks? :p

Seriuosly... for short range and humpin through thickets, alders and spruce...is there a better gun? Plus you can #### and fire one handed while drivin your quad. :D

Sure the .30-30 will work! The biggest problem the .30/30 has is it's popularity. For example, a .280 Ackley is seldom referred to as a wounder, but it is only bought by the real rifle enthusiasts, and most of these guys can shoot. Imagine what would happen if the general public thought all they had to do was buy a .280 Ackley and any elk out to 600 yards would be dropped as if by lightning. The poor old .30/30 is in use throughout the world in rifles whose condition ranges from excellent to miserable, and is used by hunters who range from those who pack a rifle every day of thier lives to the once a year deer hunter. Yes game has been lost to the .30/30, game has been lost to the .378 Weatherby (see Tod's list above), but there is no reason to be ashamed for packing a .30/30 when bush hunting Bambi. I wouldn't be so quick to say it was adaquate for moose, but thousands of moose have been taken with it.

I seriously question people who say a particular bullet is only useful within 150 yards, given the fact most deer are killed well within that range, and furthermore,I question the accuracy of most hunters beyond that range.I'm not denying some open country hunting is beyond 150 yards, but if that were the case, I wouldn't expect someone to be packing a 30/30.But for the average 40 to 60 yard shot-the 30/30 will do it's job if I do mine
