Are you sure? This was quite a few years ago, when they first came out. I took it back and got a 3-9x36 Swarovski Habicht, which at the time was only $250 more.

Actually I just did a search and....

In 1996 the company brought scope assembly into the U.S. The Diavari C 3-9x36 MC got too little press. It was a fine scope at a modest price. In 2001 Zeiss replaced the Diavari C with a trio of variables called Conquests.

So I guess it was called the Diavari C at the time. Never-the-less it was not even comparable to the Habicht, and was IMHO, at best equivalent to the VXII.

If your diavari 3x9x36 was comparable to a varxii you got a bad one.I owned one german made diavari 3x9x36 and two american made 3x9x36 diavaris as well as a 3x9x40 conquest,two swarovski 3x9x36s and four swarovski 3x10x42s.The 3x10x42 swarovskis are the brightest of the bunch but all of the ziess and swarovski scopes were brighter than the two 3.5x10x40 varixiiis that I owned.I have since sold all but the 3x10x42 swarovskis but I would still buy the conquest if I couldn't afford the swarovskis.

Maybe it was, but I haven't bothered with them since. It was the US made one. I have difficulty believing that just because they are made in the USA they cost less than 1/2 of their German made counterparts. Correct me if I am wrong, but lenses are the single most expensive parts in a scope.

That is because they don't cost 1/2 as much as the same scope made in germany.When the german made diavari was selling for $1200 the us made diavari was selling for $800.The german made diavari had the ziess t coating while the american made scope did not.The german made scope also had a rubber covered objective and was finished nicer.There were also no tariffs to pay on the US made scope.
All in all it appears that you did not own a conquest after all.You should compare a conquest to the leupolds and then you will be able to make a fair comparison.

Like the article said...they renamed the Diavari C and added models to get the Conquest line. Are you saying that Ziess changed tooling and design completely to manufacture the Conquest line after having only produced it for 4 years? More likely that it was marketing.

Where I come from that's half price. When I can afford a real Ziess - to me that is a Diavari VM/V, then I will buy one (or a Schmidt & Bender). You know how it is with optics, you generally get what you pay for. Until then I'll I put my money where my mouth is...with Swarovski and Leupold. In the end I think the Conquest line is following a trend that is very common these days: placing a well known and respected name on an inferior product at a lower price to boost sales.

By the way, I have actually used the Ziess Diavari VM/V while hunting. And when I returned the US made Ziess the owner of the shop just nodded his head and told me he completely understands and gave me a FULL refund.

And my Swarovski 3-9x36 IS brighter than my VXII 3-9x40, but then again it cost more than twice as much.

To start with the conquest was introduced as a 3x9x40 while the diavari was a 3x9x36 so obviously the conquest was not just a renamed diavari.

As for pricing I compared the same 3x9x36 scopes made in both countries which is a fair pricing comparison.
You on the other hand are comparing the 30mm tube VM/V with a 4x magnification range to a 1" conquest with a 3x magnification range, not really a fair comparison.About as fair as comparing a 1" leupold vxiii to a 30mm leupold lps scope in both performance and price.By the way,why would you buy a vx series leupold when the "real leupolds" the lps series are available?As for the leupold vxiii, it is not a true 3.5x10 scope but rather a 3.3x9.5 scope according to the leupold website.In other words it is just as close to a 3x9 as it is a 3.5x10 so a price comparison to the 3x9x50 conquest would be just as fair.

I was not aware that Ziess makes a VM/V in 3-9x40 to compare to the Conquest, hence I made the comparison I did. I don't think going from a 1" tube to a 30mm tube should give that big of a price increase.

But the real point here is that neither you nor I own a USA made Ziess, and we both own Swarovskis! :D

True,but if I couldn't afford the swarovski scopes,I would but the conquests before any leupold.To my eyes and the eyes of the vast majority of people that I have met,the conquests optics are superior to those of the vxiiis.
 
I own two US made Zeiss Conquests and one US made Leupold vari-x111, the Conquests are significantly clearer, images are much more precise, the eye relief onthe 3x9x40 is great, good on the 3.5x10x44. I firmly believe they are significantly better scopes for the money than the LEupold Varix111. The only beef I have with them and it's only a beef for me on one gun I own is the size and weight, on my traditionally sized rifles they look and perform really well, I have a Mountian rifle in 260 which I try and reduce the weight as much as possible the Leupold 2.5x8x36 in lightweight talleys reduces the overall weight and I can mount the scope much lower. On my Sako and My browning 7mm mag and 300 WSM the Zeiss are staying.
PS I bought both mine on the internet (one here and one on teh 24hourcampfire) an I paid no more than I would have for used Leupold vx111's.
 
I have a Conquest 3.5x10x44 MC on my TRG-S (although not a 30-378); no problems, nice and bright, and I don't care about the weight (hadn't really noticed actually. It replaced a B&L 4200 Elite, and has been a significant improvement. It's mounted in extra-low optilocks and just fits.

I have a Burris Signature Select on my .338 Win Mag; it's nice too, and the Ballistic Plex is cool.

I haven't had any problems with either scope.

I'd love to have a "real" Zeiss, a Swarovski, and/or a Schmidt & Bender but I am pretty pleased with what I have right now, and have not been able to save the money for a high-end scope.

I'm surpized that the Burris failed, I've always heard they are very tough compared to other brands.
 
Since it doesn't sound as though you're going to be using the long-range potential of your rifle you might want to consider a softer recoiling and less expensive caliber.

As mentioned in the previous post, I have a TRG-S in 7mm Remington Magnum with a Zeiss Conquest mounted in extra-low optilocks. Interested in working-out a trade?

It is a very expensive cartridge though. However since it is a hunting rifle i might run 10 rounds through it a year for fun and just to make sure it is staying on zero. Handloading cuts down costs a lot but it is still very expensive compared to a .308!

My bother uses a 2.5 to 8 vx 111 boone and works great, I have a LPS 2.5 to 10 on wsm.
its better but price is not, If I had to do it again I would go with vx111 nice solid scope and sharp
