Hi all,

I am adding another Weatherby Magnum to my collection in the next couple of weeks, a 30-378.

Doing a google search for the most appropriate reloading powder has netted me several results.

So far, looks like Varget is the best choice, but I would to ask you guy's opinions here. I don't know if a Large Bore Magnum Powder like RL25 would fit the bill.

And also what recipe and velocities and bullet selections are you guys using.

I was thinking 167Grain Lapua Scenars

Regards

Where did you find 30-378 WBY MAG load data showing to use Varget???

I wouldn't advise Varget at all with the 30-378.

H1000
Retumbo (be careful)
RL25
H50BMG

180gr and heavier any of those powders I would use.

The lighter 167gr Scenar you'll have to research.

At this moment I am on a loading roll....50bmg seems to do quite well for 200 plus gr bullets.

See, this is why I ask here, because I was doing Google search, and some forums mentioned varget!

I definitely will be moving up in bullet weight too,

I actually have RL25 here because one of my other weatherby mags, my 338-378.

Regards

With that bullet weight it's RL25 and slower. US869 always gave me the highest MV's with my 300 RUM and would do the same with the monstrous 30-378.

In my 30/378 I've used H-870, Rl-33. Retumbo , Rl-22 and H-1000, and IMR 7828. I would also include Rl 25, H-50BMG and US 869 as good powders to use in this caliber. Mine really liked H 870 and RL 33 with 200 gr Nosler Part. IMR 7828 was a tad on the fast side in my rifle with 180 and 200 gr bullets as well as RL-22,. Word of caution Who ever told you of Varget in this caliber knows nothing about reloading this caliber. In fact I would venture to add that it may even be dangerous to use in the 30/378 as it would nowhere near fill the case enough to be safe.

I would also add that the Fed 215 primer was the best I used in mine. When ever I used other brand primers strange things happened like Hang fires, pressure spikes etc.

120 grains 180 nosler bt , I think it was in the 3500 fps
It's a compressed load and the recoil is vicious lol
A guy we new wanted to prove that a real man can shoot that calibre with out a break
He took it off fired 3 shots , that was enough for him , no one need a gun with that much power he says
Well the recoil twisted the leupold dove dale rings right out of the bases.
So now he had to some new rings and resite in lol

Why careful on the Retumbo? I'm in the same boat, new at reloading. Was thinking of using 180g TTSX for bullets

I am going to agree with this.I just switched to Fed215 to fix my hang fire issue.Right now 50bmg,H870,H1000 and soon 7977 are in my crosshairs. My bullet of choice are Hornady 208 Eld match.....with 190 Berger on the side line. The heavy bullets are working the best, approximately 3000fps with groups in the inch range. My 190s are approximately 3300fps....

Retumbo seems to reach high pressure signs below book max loads. That's what I used to find with my Weatherby Accumark 30-378.

Retumbo was kind of "temperamental" loaded in the 30-378.

I didn't see pressure problems using H1000 or H50BMG.
